Will we make the June 30 deadline?

Post by Durandal »

With the situation in Iraq actually deteriorating in the past couple of week (more and more attacks by insurgents, more soldiers dying), I have to wonder if Bush will be able to keep to the June 30 deadline for handing power over. Is he really going to just pull out of there if the situation continues to deteriorate the way it has? It seems to me that, if the trend continues, handing over power to the Iraqis on June 30 would be a sure recipe for a fundamentalist Islam government to pop up within the next few years and condemning the country to even more terrorism from Saddam's still-existing loyalists.

We're damned if we do and damned if we don't, but Bush put us in that position. Whether we'll make the deadline or not, I'm undecided.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

We will not be able to legitimately hand over power on June 30. We may toss the potato and run, but I don't consider that handing over power. More like fucking Iraq up the ass unlubed.

It depends. If you're talking about handing power over to fanatical Shiite gunmen, we could certainly pull that off. If you're talking about handing it over to a stable government which actually represents the Iraqi people... no. So I voted no.

I think that this will turn into a hot button issue for the last few months of the campaign. If they hand it over on time and fuck it up, Bush will look a complete ass. If they don't hand it over before November, he'll merely look stupid.

Well, considering the Iraqi security forces are in shambles and there is open rebellion all over the country, any transfer of power would be a mere token action.

If the hand-off does go ahead on June 30, it will either be:

a) a farce (i.e. American puppet regime)

b) a disaster (e.g. civil war)

c) both

It will probably be a lot of A and a little bit of B.

Noone's even enunciated what the hell they're supposed to be handing over. US troops will remain, Bremer has already written numerous laws that the Iraqi government won't be able to change- this is the status quo pretending to be something else. It'll be purely a cosmetic change- there will be no "pull out" of anything.

More it will be a lot of A and even more of B. This will all end in tears.

Where's Axis Kast? Shouldn't he be pointing out how we're actually bringing joy and prosperity to the entire Middle East?

Unless he's busy tracking tiger-stress incidents...
