Australian kids TV show blasted for depicting girl + 2 moms

Play School attacked for gay mums

Someone please tell me how most Americans(and other countries)got the stupid notion that Australia was a largely socially progressive nation?

The social welfare and medicare systems are percieved completely differently in Australian then it would be in say the USA. Just because some country has a welfare system that actually is in a semi-working state doesnt mean they are going to spontaneously turn into a communist state.

Australian politics is generally fast at responding to perceived political topics.

Australian Aboriginals have only been allowed legal access to alcohol(it was written into the Constitution that it was a criminal act ot supply Aboriginals with alcohol) for about 42 years. When Aboriginals were granted the right to vote(requiring a consitutional amendment), they also wacked the non-alcohol statement in the constitution.

In comparison women(over 21) could vote in Western Australian elections in 1899, as a consequence of the Australian federal consitution had the right to vote when the Commonwealth of Australia was formed.

On a slightly different note:

Cat-kill sentence appeal applauded
Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson yesterday announced his decision to appeal on the grounds the sentences imposed on the men were "inadequate".
Apparently a $2000 fine(judge was told the max fine was $14k instead of $75k too), and getting a criminal record plus being kicked out of the army isnt enough.

Hope they get fined to the maxium extend of the law.

I say good on the ABC for this.

They at least seem more progressive than the government that funds them.

Which is of course why Howard has been constently squeazing harder and harder to reduce the funding to them. Hell since he came into Government, look how much he has cut from them thanks to their refusal to tow the line.

You know I thought it was a GOOD thing in a Western Democracy when the news services didn't tow the Government line by default....

Good on the ABC; if I ever watch TV it's 90% of the time on their channel.

Did anyone else find the objections raised to not only be moronic, but strange? One of the ministers who blasted the ABC accused them of being "too politically correct." All playschool did was show two parents who happened to be lesbians - how is this 'too' politically correct? Of course, the other obvious question is: why is this a problem? What kind of moron accuses an organisation (that receives funding from the gov't) of being too politically correct?

In the Dark Ages, people were persecuted for opposing the sensibilities of the state. (Think Paganism.)

Same thing, just now.

Ignorance seems to be spreading again like the plague. The amount of anti-gay propaganda seems to be increasing, but then we're winning some fronts.

The more progress for gay rights, the louder the resistance gets. It's same for this as in any other civil rights movement, the sundowners get shrill and insistent the more their views are seen as anachronistic.

Well the silent a majority in this country are pissed at this issue. Not because there was a boob on T.V. but because of the stupid shit that the vocal minority have decided to piss and moan about.

That's what happens when most people don't vote, which is how things go over here. Somebody once wrote that if the airlines advertised the way politicians do in the US, nobody would fly. That's probably true, and shows a method to the madness.

If your supporters are fanatical, but a minority, what better way to make their votes more important than by discouraging regular folks from voting? People need to remember Mencken's full quote:

"Nobody ever went broke betting against the intelligence of the common people, or lost an election thereby."

Um, Jordie - Elfdart was talking about the American electoral system, where voting isn't compulsory. It is over here, where you get the fine if you don't get your name ticked off. It isn't over there, where the most powerful man in the world can get elected by less than half the population of the country he's supposedly representing.

At the risk of sounding cheesy; it's the American way.

I don't know whether the punishing of no-shows to election booths is good or not. On the one hand, everyone should do their bit if they are eligible to vote. On the other hand, punishing someone for not voting seems harsh if they want to abstain.

I should explain: in Australia, it is compulsory to register on the electoral roll if you're of age, and to turn up on the day and get your name ticked off to prove that you did in fact attend. If you want to abstain, you may do so - as soon as you can prove that you were there. Essentially you can get your name ticked off, then wave goodbye and walk out the door. You probably get the Evil Eye from the old farts who generally handle those desks.

The other method of 'abstaining' is the 'donkey vote' - which is where you write on the ballot paper "Fuck you arseholes, I hate you all!" and then put that in the box. Such 'votes' are discounted by the Commission. :D

I like this idea. Choosing between Labour or Conservative is too hard. So saying "fuck you both up the arse!" is humorous and expresses my true feelings.
