What is your political alignment?

Post by YT300000 »

Do you tend more towards the left or the right?

I have extremist views on virtually everything. I'm extremely conservative on, say, gun ownership and control, whereas I am extremly liberal on policing. All my views average out to about the middle. Ergo, I am an extreme centrist (kind of a contradiction of terms, isn't it?)

Centrist. It just fits my overall philosophy in life - that attaining a balance is desirable.

Gah :? ....voted for Centrist before I saw Extreme Centrist. I'm with YT3 on the political spectrum – all my views blended together make me a moderate, but on individual issues I'm a hardliner.

I'm rather centrist, but I'm sure I'll lean a bit more conservatively soon.

So what does it makes me......left right up down, tell me. :)

On social policy I’m Libertarian, on Economic policy I’m pretty much centrist (that’s centrist in Britain), on foreign policy I’m decidedly anti-imperialist so I’d say I’m left to far left.

The left/right model is far to simplistic and just doesn’t work; you at least need to differentiate social and economic policy.

Fascists are actually leftist. More government control of the economy. The only difference between it and communism is that the business had nominal ownership.

Don’t try and right off everything you dislike as left wing.

Fascists are not leftist they are capitalists and in favour of authoritarian social control they are on the extreme right.

I'm a socially liberal Centrist with slight Libertarian leanings. On social issues, I'm as far left as they come. On the more mundane, day-to-day issues I could go either way on a case by case basis. I try not to let party politics sway my decisions, but American politics are so polarized I often find myself on the left side because social issues tend to trump all else in my book; with the possible exception of national defense. However, I'm not conviced that either side has a coherent plan for that.
As far as the size of government goes, I'm generally in favor of limited government, but realize that it isn't right to keep it strictly within the Constitution. I'm opposed to welfare, yet in favor of nationalized healthcare.

All things considered, I'd say the American left suits me well; although I have a real problem with the insane welfare abuse and all-around mamby-pambiness.

Anyway, everytime I see a poll like that......I

FVCK THE FRENCH FOR STUPID POLITICAL DIVISION THAT SAYS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING USEFUL ABOUT A PERSON'S POLITICS

It would be much better to base political divisions based on values and beliefs in what would work, not the moving circle of left-right division.

Aly, Libertarians are by definition centrist, because they have very left social views and very right economic views.

Everyone else:
The dichotomy of the political spectrum is really incorrect. There are two axes that must be judged independently of one another. The single-axis system makes it impossible to have any appropriate analysis. for instance, left tends to mean socially liberal but economically unliberal (government spending, regulation, control, etc), whereas right means socially conservative but economically liberal. But holding two opposites, socially liberal and economically liberal, or socially conservative and economically unliberal, are half of each, making both centrist, while being diametric opposites.

the political compass is a far superior system, dividing the political "spectrum" into two axes: social freedoms on the y axis and economic freedoms on the x. Left (on x) being communism, Right (on x) being laissez-faire capitalism. Top (on y) being authoritarian, Bottom (on y) being anarchistic. That makes the Top-Right more Conservative-Republican, the Top-Left more Communist, the Bottom-Right more Ghandi/Green, and the Bottom-Right more Libertarian.

Please use the Political Compass to determine your association, not the Spectrum.
