$50,000 Reward for Proof of Bush's Service

Post by Stravo »

Group offers $50,000 for proof of Bush service
Tuesday, September 14, 2004 Posted: 3:33 PM EDT (1933 GMT)

(CNN) -- The founder of the group Texans for Truth said Tuesday that he is offering $50,000 to anyone who can prove President Bush fulfilled his service requirements, including required duties and drills, in the Alabama Air National Guard in 1972.

The group made the announcement as Bush was in Las Vegas, Nevada, to address the National Guard Association's convention.

"Today would be a fine day for him to finally answer all the questions that have dogged him since he entered public life," the group's founder, Glenn Smith, said in a statement.

"Bush's dishonesty about missing from service during Vietnam goes to the heart of his presidency. He was dishonest then just as he is misleading us about why we went to war with Iraq. He dodges responsibility then just as he dodges responsibility for Iraq today."

White House communications director Dan Bartlett has said that the fact Bush received an honorable discharge means he fulfilled his military duties. Bartlett has dismissed questions about Bush's service as partisan attacks.

Smith said the controversy about whether documents obtained by CBS News -- alleging the future president failed to obey an order to undergo a physical exam and failed to complete his service in the Alabama Air National Guard -- was irrelevant.

"Authentic or not, they don't really answer the question about where Mr. Bush was when he was supposed to be doing his duty in the National Guard," he said.

On Monday, first lady Laura Bush said that she believed such documents were probably forgeries.

"You know, they probably are altered, and they probably are forgeries, and I think that's terrible, really," she said in an interview with Radio Iowa.

"That's actually one of the risks you take when you run for public office or when you're in the public eye for any reason, and that's that obviously a lot of things are said about you that aren't true and that's the drawback -- that's the one thing that's not great about serving in public office."

CBS News has said it stands by its story and will continue to report on it.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Tuesday that the president has seen the documents and "he has no recollection" of any of them.

White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said the first lady's comments do not mean the White House has done an investigation into the authenticity of the documents but that news organizations' probes have raised questions about whether the documents are real.

CBS reported that the memos were written in 1972 and 1973 by Col. Jerry Killian, Bush's squadron commander. Killian died in 1984.

In the memos put forward by CBS News, the author complained he was being pressured to "sugarcoat" the future president's performance evaluations and that Bush failed to meet performance standards while a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard, including getting a required physical exam.

Killian also purportedly wrote that he believed Bush -- at the time the son of a Texas congressman -- was "talking to someone upstairs" to get permission to transfer to the Alabama National Guard to work on a Senate campaign.

But the authenticity of the documents has come under fire in media reports, with some experts insisting they were not written on a typewriter in the 1970s but generated on a computer at a later date.

Forensic document experts who have examined the memos have told CNN that they cannot conclusively determine whether the documents are authentic -- but some features do raise questions about whether the documents were written in the early 1970s.

Killian's son, Gary, and former wife, Margorie Connell, have said they do not believe he would have written the memos.

The CBS report came days after the Texans for Truth group began airing television ads questioning whether Bush fulfilled his military obligations. Its name is a takeoff on Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which has been airing ads questioning the military record of Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry. That group's allegations are at odds with the official Navy records and Kerry's former crew mates.
One thing is for sure - the word truth after this election won't mean what it used to: Swiftboots for truth, Texans for Truth.

Oh and Laura Bush needs to STFU, you are NOT qualified in any way shape or form to make assesments of forged documents, I don't think she was even dating Bush at the time in question so what the FUCK can she know?

"You know, they probably are altered, and they probably are forgeries, and I think that's terrible, really," she said in an interview with Radio Iowa.

Yes Laura...forgery is a bad thing dear

Laura Bush should stick to running over teenagers. By the way, in Kitty Kelley's book, Barbara Bush ran over a guy on a golf course and offered his family beads as compensation. How does the old song go?

well, cmon what do you expect her to say? Shes been seeing all the news reports on the documents (unless, of course, she watches jsut CBS). She, like every other person, has the right to say "yeah, they probably arent true." She even threw probably in there. I dont think she was offering facts, just her opinion. And as for kitty kelly...HA! You dont find very many people quoting her as a reliable source. The ex wife whom Kelly claims told her that Bush use cocain at camp David was on CNN this morning saying she never said the things Kelly attributes to her. Its sad, her book prolly will be in the top ten...but so are Danielle Steel books.

using the president's relatives, or wife or whoever the fuck laura bush is as a witness to help determine whether or not some documents are forgeries when she has no actual authority in the area in question, and couldn't possibly be able to provide an accurate answer is little more than a bullshit tactic. people may not use her as a reliable source from the article, but the fact that she's even there at all is ridiculous.

I love their rhetorical attacks where they stridently say "WHY WON'T THEY NAME THEIR SOURCE?" as if it hasn't been common knowledge for decades that journalists must often protect the anonymity of their sources.

If Nixon's spin-doctors were this skillful, that's all the American people would have heard throughout the Watergate scandal: WHY WON'T WOODWARD AND BURNSTEIN REVEAL THE IDENTITY OF DEEP THROAT? HMMM????? And they would be making fake tapes and then using them to prove that the Watergate tapes could have been faked too. They'd be bringing out voice impersonators and saying "see? I can fake a tape too!" And they would have done this within days of the early relevations coming to light, in an effort to publicly isolate, humiliate, marginalize, and ultimately nullify the reporters conducting the investigations.

Laura Bush was giving an interview to radio station, people asked her all kinds of questions. They asked her about this what does she do? give her opinion. Hell, I would defend my husband. Its the person who wrote this article thats the moron. He/she just kinda stuck that quote from an interview in there. I mean, this is a great example of how the media can distort things. They stick that line in there and people bash Laura Bush instead of the author who wrote her in there like she belongs with the experts in the case. I doubt Laura would consider herself an expert on this particular issue. Her opinions just dont belong in an article on this topic.

So now Bush's failure to report for a medical examination is "alleged"? He did fail to report for it; this is shown in the DoD documents that were released. Naturally, those documents have simply been ignored in all this discussion about how Times New Roman looks the same in Microsoft Word as it did on old typewriters. (Imagine that; the same font looking the same!)

The only charge those documents make is that Bush was a child of privilege. Outrageous!!

I just wish they would say "our source is neither from the republican camp nor the democrat" so that we can get back to the issues. Instead the media is hinting at how it might have been an inside job blahblahblah. Of course, I suppose i could understand that even saying that is breaking precident on how to protect sources.

How does this change the fact that she is not qualified to render an opinion on this matter for the public record? If a reporter sticks a microphone in my face and asks me something, I would hope that somewhere in the back of my mind, I might have the teeniest, tiniest suspicion that what I say might get quoted so I should be careful not to make statements on matters in which I have done no personal investigation.

It's one thing for her to say "my husband is a good man", but it's quite another to say "they're probably forgeries". One is a statement of subjective opinion, the other is a statement of fact.

You honestly feel there's no middle ground between "villifying her husband" and saying they're forgeries? It's impossible for someone in the public eye to think of a third possibility?

Kitty Kelley is a cross between a gossip columnist and historian. She comes across as a gossipy yenta, so she can often coax people into divulging incredibly embarassing and inflammatory things -the sorts of things nobody would tell a straight ahead reporter. Because of the kinds of material Kelley deals in (i.e. personal stuff, like Dubya snorting cocaine at Camp David), she covers her ass with witnesses to these "kiss and tell" interviews and her books are run through batteries of attorneys to make sure her publisher doesn't get sued for libel. Sharon Bush claims she never confirmed the story about Numbnuts doing lines of coke, but a third party says that Kelley's version of the interview is true. To date, nobody has ever won any kind of libel action against her, nor has she ever been made to retract something in her books -a much better record than "respectable" news outlets.

Kelley is an equal opportunity offender, by the way. She did a very unflattering biography of Jackie Kennedy and one for the British royals (British libel law is much more weighted toward the plaintiffs).

Do I believe eveything in her books? I don't know, but considering all the fawning coverage given to proven liars, forgers and frauds like the Shit Boaters, Kitty Kelley should get equal time to discuss why Laura Bush lamented that the Bush household didn't have any big, strong buck slaves like Mandingo.

On Mrs. Bush, I don't blame her for standing by her husband and suggesting what now seems obvious -- that the questionable documents are most likely fakes. As for CBS, they'll be lucky if anyone takes their news department seriously for a while to come. Congratulations to Mr. Rather on his upcoming retirement, by the way.

My opinion is that the Democrats are purposely sinking the Kerry campaign in order to set up Hillary for the 2008 ticket. I mean really, who can take Kerry seriously? The guy is obviously a throw-away candidate...

I don't see that, Jegs. There has been and still are plenty of concervatives, just not raving Bushites.

The problem, as Wong has alread pointed out a couple times in this thread, is that the fake memo's don't trump the DoD ones they got with the FoIA.

That said, the CBS/maybe fakes, are interesting, NOT in a Bush/Kerry way but more in a 'what journalists will do for a story' way. Both sides, right and left, will print just about anything anymore as long as they think it might damage the other side.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Jegs, if you think America is perfectly situated on the centre of the political spectrum, it's clear that you can't see the whole political spectrum. This is a pretty centrist board, if you know what the WHOLE political spectrum looks like. It only looks leftist compared to places where church/state separation is viewed as a mistake and people still think the war in Iraq was fought under perfectly honest pretenses.

I think the Democratic patsies on the news shows would do themselves a lot of good if they threw down the gauntlet thusly:

"You say Bush fulfilled his duty. There's a $50,000 reward for proof. When are you going to collect?" And when the mouthbreathers start hemming and hawing, keep saying: "Fifty grand and no takers!"
