I was unaware that Hollywood had some sort of obligation to Canada to shoot movies over there. Nor was I aware that offering tax breaks to companies for the horrendous crime of giving jobs to Americans constituted "hypocrisy."

Get used to it, non-Americans. You're in for a lot protectionism through preferential tax breaks if Kerry is elected.

Yeah, because we've experienced none of this up till now under a Republican president. Not with beef, not with lumber, not with this ...

It's going to be even more fun under Kerry.

I don't know whether this relates to whatever Montcalm refers to, but it is hypocritical for the U.S. to preach the glories of free trade to the world while slapping tariffs on foreign products and practicing tax subsidization.

I guess that depends on whether he plans to keep his "improve foreign relations" or "protect local jobs" promises. He can't realistically keep both promises simultaneously, unless he just chooses to selectively keep his "protect local jobs" promises for countries with whom he doesn't think good foreign relations are important: a tricky balancing act.

So, would it be as big a deal if it only affected a place like Prague which seems to be the it location for cheap shoots?

He can do both, but he can't do it with the same policy. He'll probably create a better atmosphere for international multilateral actions and works: Iraqi reconstruction, etc. The wealth gets spread around more, the US doesn't extend a merry 'fuck you' to the international community and foreign relations will improve. Yes, Kerry is going to support economic protectionism, he's favoring the US economic standing in the world, he's a capitalist, don't be surprised. Improve relations with foreign countries != Exporting jobs to your front door.
Who knows, maybe a Canadian movie industry will sprout and give Hollywood some competition in theaters. Oh wait, I forgot, you canadians speak French and the French have no word for Entrepreneur.

Hey retard, that was Ben Affleck. I guess you didn't see the big picture of Affleck with the "criminal" quote under it. Schwarzenegger promised on the campaign trail to end US productions coming from Canada, and now he's following through. And even if Arnold did like filming movies in Canada, that was when he was an actor. Now he's the governor of the largest state in the US. So his priorities have kind of changed from "Places I like to film in" to "What is best for the people under my governance."

Naturally, you can't recognize this, given that you're a knee-jerking, punctuation-deprived retard.

Since Kerry's proposed policies are aimed at stopping the loss of current american jobs and not the retrieval of them, then this is irrelevant.
But since you'll probably pull another analogy out of your butt, I'll reply to the gist of your argument too.

Protectionism over American jobs would promote the export of manufactured goods, over the import of foreign made goods whose profits go to corporations in the US/caymen islands. Money in a protected economy flows out slower than in one that is extended.

How did he pull it off anyway? Does he have any influence in Congress? Because this bill was passed by Congress, based on the article.

IIRC, Arnold filmed a lot of his movies in Mexico/South America, not Canada. True Lies, Predator, Total Recall, etc.

But if what Affleck says is to be believed, he doesn't like shooting in Canada -- or countries other than the U.S. He called runaway productions "criminal."

Arnold may not have to do anything at all to stop US productions from being filmed here in Canada: with the value of the Canadian dollar soaring (it's already worth more than $0.80 US, and could possibly hit $0.90 US by the end of the year), the main advantage to shooting films in Canada could soon vanish...

Not at all. Jackson, Mississippi's skyline consists of about 3 buildings over 15 stories.

Its sad. New Orleans has sort of a skyline...

One thing ths will help with is that there is a town about 20 miles north of Jackson called Canton. When a movie requires that something be set in an old south town, Canton normally gets the job. Movies that spring immediately to mind are O Brother Where Art Thou and My Dog Skip.

It calls itself "Canton: City of Lights!"
