WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush won an early election day victory in the small New Hampshire hamlet of Dixville Notch which is renowned for casting the country's first ballots in US presidential elections.

A tiny population of 26 registered voters backed Bush by a comfortable 19-7 margin over Democratic challenger Senator John Kerry, according to a tally by the town clerk's office.

No votes were cast for independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader in the small settlement located in New Hampshire's White Mountains, just south of the Canadian border in the US northeast.

The settlement's 26 voters trooped into the luxury Balsams hotel just after midnight local time (0500 GMT) Tuesday to cast some of the first votes in the 2004 election. Almost half were registered Republicans.

The 26 voters included 11 registered Republicans, two registered Democratic voters and 13 independents, according to the town clerk's records.

Early election day math suggested eight independents voted for Bush while five opted to support Kerry.

In the 2000 election, 21 Dixville Notch voters backed Bush while five voted for then Democratic candidate Al Gore and a single voter backed Nader out of 27 registered voters.

In the prior two elections, in 1992 and 1996, Democrat Bill Clinton won and was re-elected to the White House after a tighter spread of votes occurred in Dixville Notch.

Uh... so?

I wonder how often Hicksville... er... Dixville Notch voters decisions have matched that of the rest of the country. Probably not too often.

No they don't (at least as far as I know - somebody call Mike Barone of Larry Kudlow).

Dixville Notch's claim to fame is that they are the very first people to cast ballots in national elections. Every 4 years news crews make a 'pilgrimage' out to 'middle of nowhere' New Hampshire to see how the 20 or so people who live in Dixville voted.

They start releasing the results of the election before the polls close?

Yes, but the polls are still open in the rest of the country. I would have thought that they'd have to keep the results under wraps until voting is over, so as not to influence the votes of the rest of the country.

That would make sense, wouldn't it? In actuality, they plaster results all ovre the news as soon as they have a rumor to go on.

Wowie. It's a hamlet that has no other bragging rights of any kind and which will be forgotten for another four years as soon as this thread is abandoned. *shrugs*
