On the evening of December 6, 1989, a 25 year old man by the name of Marc Lépine walked into the École Polytechnique, the School of Engineering at the University of Montréal. Lépine had sought to join the Canadian Armed Forces, but was rejected. He had also studied for admission to the École Polytechnique, but was not accepted -- a decision he apparently blamed on "affirmative action" policies for women.
So he decided to 'get even' with all the feminists he blamed for ruining his life.
He carried a concealed Sturm Ruger Mini-14 semi-automatic rifle into the school--then he started shooting as many women he could find. He killed one woman in a corridor right away, then went into a classroom, screamed "I want the women. I hate feminists!", and proceeded to seperate the men from the women. He kicked the men out of the classroom, lined up the 10 women left up against a wall and mowed them down firing squad style.
But he wasn't finished.
He went down into the cafeteria (shooting any female he saw), killed 3 more women there, then went into another classroom. He was a bit sloppy here and instead of seperating the students, he apparently just decided to blast away at random women. When the surviving students managed to run out of the class, he apparently decided to just stick around in the classroom. He taped a suicide note to himself and blew his head off with a shotgun.
It was all over in 20 minutes.
The final toll--fourteen women dead, and thirteen other students were injured (nine women, four men).
December 6, the anniversary of the Montreal massacre, is Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
