Man survives 0.914 blood-alcohol reading

Post by dr. what »

linky

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) - Incredulous doctors made five blood tests on a drunken man to confirm he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.914, far above the usual life-threatening range, police and doctors said Tuesday.

The 67-year old man, whose name was not released, was hospitalized Dec. 20, when a car knocked him down on a street in the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.

A breath test showed an incredibly high blood alcohol level, but police officers thought the result was inaccurate because the man was conscious and talked with them, said Col. Angel Rangelov, head of police in Plovdiv.

Laboratory analysis of five subsequent blood samples taken the same day confirmed that the man had had a blood-alcohol level of 0.914, Rangelov said. A blood-alcohol level of 0.55 is usually considered life threatening.

The man was reported in stable condition after treatment for head injuries.

91.4% of his blood was pure alcohol!?! His blood was 182.8 proof!?

A BAC of .914 means his blood was less than 1 percent alchohol.

And that's nearly double a fatal number, even for hardcore boozers.
The highest I'd ever heard of before was a .056, and the woman who blew it was an incomprehensible burnout with a tissue tolerance that no human being should possess.

The neigborhood alcoholic when I was a kid was found slumped in the road one night with a BAC of around .41, and she died a couple of days later.

For this man to have double that and live defies imagination. He must have a still for a liver.

That would be fucking awesome, but no. The number yielded by a BAC test is a percentage. 0.914% of his blood was alcohol.

That said...there oughta be a medal or something for this guy. There's literally no other recorded instance of someone holding their liquor so well. He must have to drink Everclear to get really drunk.

The dangers of typing a percentage without having your morning coffee--that little annoying decimal point shifts a few places to the right....

Fuck--tell me about it--.55 is suppose to kill a normal human--at .914% of his blood being alcohol and a normal human having 5 to 6 litres of blood in them means that this guy had something like 50 milliltres of his blood was replaced by alcohol.

How can this guy possibly survive?

Somehow I don't think his liver will be in any functional position after this escapade... :o

The world record for drunkenness was over 1.0%. The human body can build up very high tolerances to alcohol over time, and that's how you get people like this. Chances are this guy has been drinking heavily for forty or fifty of his sixtiy seven years.

Well, give him the silver medal instead. Any more information on our gold medalist?

We still have a long way to go before we can achieve a blood-alcohol ratio of more than 50% though, but keep on fighting the good fight everybody.

It will be a fine day when we lightweights can get smashed drinking the blood of other drunken people.

no it's when you reach the point where they don't need to embalm you, and can use lower temprature creamation ovens as you already have enough fuel/preservative in your bloodstream

Damn. I was in a coma and not breathing with a .364 over Thanksgiving, and near death from that. .914 is insane.
