Random Inauguration Reactions (Fairly Pic Heavy)

Post by Chmee »

I just got a load of Rehnquist's outfit ... he looks more like a priest or a Romulan than Chief Justice of the SCOTUS .....

Made me look for some explanation:
Rehnquist also created a unique robe for himself as Chief Justice in 1994. It has four golden bars on each sleeve. In the past, Chief Justices had not dressed differently than any of the Associate Justices. Rehnquist's robe was modeled after a robe he had seen in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta Iolanthe, first staged in London in 1882. The costume which inspired Chief Justice Rehnquist, an acknowledged Gilbert and Sullivan fan, is worn by the Lord Chancellor, a character called upon to settle a dispute among a colony of fairies.

Bush's speech was really good (although I didn't like the many religious references). Judge Rhenquist didn't look too healthy, which isn't that strange. All in all, a fine ceremony (except for the prayers, perhaps).

I know it's nothing new to Bush or this century, but the whole 'royal' pomp of the ceremony is annoying to me. He's Chief Executive, just have a little ceremony in the Oval Office or Congress on the first official day and then get on with the job .... save the money.

Way, way way too much security

Multiple metro stations are locked down, and the National Mall is IIRC offlimits, and to even get anywhere, Smithsonian, etc you have to wait
in long lines because of limited entry points; with the mall offlimits, that's
half the entrances to the Smithsonian museums gone, doubling the lines
at the remaining entrances.

They got cops from Miami, Tulsa, Austin, Fort Worth, Cook County,
Atlanta, etc down there, and the Army is handing most of the security
checkpoint duties.

Geez, you'd think the US was going to be invaded by multiple factions of terrorists the way this sounds. The myth of this huge organised terror network certainly is working its magic.

Is it actually a myth? I read an article a year or so ago that claimed that Al-Queda is a complete invention of the US Government and that the orgaizations that make it up are only loosely affiliated. I am curious to know more.

Do they really need that much security or is it just because they can and for show? The entire city has pretty much been turned into a de facto military camp.

Oh yes, I forgot, I never knew that you could use Metrobuses as giant
mobile roadblocks. That's damn ingenious. Drive them across a street
to block it off, and then turn it off, and take the keys.

That's rather excessive, IMO. Artillery, for God's sake? To hit what? The mass battalions of Osama clones that will surge across the border from Maryland?

Meanwhile, Boston goes "WHOOM!" in a puff of smoke.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

I got lucky and managed to get shots of the ceremonial artillery they're going to use for the 21-gun salute

Meanwhile, the entire National Mall was blocked off limits, patrolled by
officers, the only way to get from one side to the other was to walk all
the way around it, or go underground in a road tunnel that had been
closed off to traffic.

And this asshole was using a fecking BULLHORN. a BULLHORN to shout
right into the crowds not less than 3 feet away from him, and on the side
of the bullhorn as a sticker was "Homosexuality is a Sin". I'm deaf and I
could fucking HEAR the damn bullhorn. I felt like coldcocking him to
shut him up to save all of our hearing, but goddamnit I can't get in any
trouble..

Good pics, Shep.

Man, I feel for those skateboard jockies... (The flatbed trucks).

Delivering into DC is a nightmare on a good day. Toss in all the security bullshit... hope they got bonuses.

Oh wait, this is the trucking industry. HAHAHAHAH. Bonuses. I made a funny.

Actually, they were idling along the side of the road near the Washington
Monument. Guess what's on those? That magical security device called
the Jersey Barrier.

A guy I work with who's Army Reserve is in DC somewhere on security duty.
A lot of WV policemen volunteered to work security as well.

Ah, ceremonial arty-- forgot about 21-gun salutes. Here, when you hear cannons fire, it means it's lunchtime.

Still... I see more and more of this in the future. Eventually I'll dig out my old pictures from East Berlin and see how close we may have come.

Added the note in the title that the thread's now kind of pic heavy.

I heard they closed a hundred blocks for this damn thing. Not that I drove around to sightsee a bunch the last time I was in DC, but why the hell did they need to close that much off? Is the parade really a marathon? They've been telling people over the radio to take the metro for two weeks now because of the number of blocks they were closing, but I'll bet traffic's still an absolute nightmare...ugh. And for what? It's like all the hoopla the RNC put NYC through...

Glad I'm miles and miles away from all that crap. *waves Maryland flag*

Yeah, a lot of the ceremonies get on my nerves. Behold the degree to which the President of the United States is not a King, Queen, Czar, Chairman (In the communist sense), Emperor, or Prince.
