What other Jobs advertise?
Okay, so the only jobs I've ever seen advertise are, quite literally, the worst jobs in the universe.
1) McDonald's
This explains itself
2) The Army/Marines:
Come join our healthy supply of replacements!
3) MCI Worldcom Pheonix:
Such a tedious telemarketing job that Anything would make it better than it was.
Anyone ever seen ads for any other jobs? Any of them jobs where you don't want to kill the manager?
By the by, not quite sure if this belongs here or in SLAM, I guess the admins will decide.

While Iraq is in fact a shithole how does this negate the benefits of physical fitness, self-confidence, a free education, signing bonus if in fact you choose a combat arms, seeing other parts of the world, 3 free meals everyday etc etc? The pay is nothing to balk at but much of it (and MOST of it if you are in an area of conflict as defined by the current administration) is tax exempt (good god don't I know this if anyone, look at my fucking sig), and while on a post outside of any warzone you can go off post, spend money, interact with the economy, still get access to stateside TV, internet etc. You get a retirement plan, free medical and dental while you're in and extended compensation should you retire from the Armed Forces, I personally am going to apply to forever rid myself of glasses for free instead of thousands of dollars...Tom_Aurum wrote:2) The Army/Marines:

You choose instead to characterize the Armed Forces with one fucking sentence that highlights a stupid war and the fact that, yeah, you might get shot at.
Ignorant fuck.

I'm sorry to say, it's a job that advertises. Yeah, I'd say it to a Marine's face. If you can show me an actually good job that advertises, I'd be half inclined to listen to your argument. But something I find questionable about:
A) the recent stop-loss policy
B) yes, I do have a problem with the war in Iraq and a commander (bush) that can't get his proctologist to find his head
C) a group that preys on the young, the impressionable, and the broke

And I got a problem with you. The Marines are the reason I can go to college, the Marines are the reason I'm healthy and active. But aside from that numbnuts.
The Marines are why most Americans can sleep at night without fear of other militaries. You can fucking cry in your damn milk all you want Jr. But frankly the military is necessary if you want your happy existence.
Has for the "preying" on the young, impressable and broke. How many Rich people are willing to give it up and live in barricks room with 2 other guys? How many old men and women are going to stand up to the punishment today? Dipshit, war is a young person's game these days. And I was payed better has a Marine than in any job I had before, free medical, free dental, free food, water, electrial, and housing and I can still grab cash for college? Excuse me if I don't feel to abused.
So cry me a river, while you hide behind the green wall.

You really are dumb aren't you? The superiority of your position in your head nonwithstanding, do you think a marine would give a fuck?dumbfuck wrote:Yeah, I'd say it to a Marine's face.
Something "I find questionable about:" jobs going off shore, we could use a stop-loss here.dumbfuck wrote:the recent stop-loss policy
The military provides an opportunity for many people who otherwise would have very little upwards mobility in life. If you're a shit poor black kid from Louisiana COULD you consider college? It may be fucked up that we basically have a de facto draft in this way but these people can otherwise amount to something in their lives. For it does in fact offer a clusterfuck of benefits which I see you've ignored.dumbfuck wrote:a group that preys on the young, the impressionable, and the broke

Alright, here's a hint...the fact that risking getting killed is one of the few ways to get to college if you're poor shows a huge fucking problem with the way the US works rather than a huge plus point of the armed forces.

Quite aside from this valid point, it's rather stupid of Aurum to start making such cheap shots at people who do the kind of job he would never have the balls to take up. It's not like the Mess members who are or were professional soldiers all signed up just for college benefits, some of them have had rather different reasons, and mocking them for their choice like that is stupid.Keevan_Colton wrote:Alright, here's a hint...the fact that risking getting killed is one of the few ways to get to college if you're poor shows a huge fucking problem with the way the US works rather than a huge plus point of the armed forces.

I have to say, if the recruiting shown in F9/11 among other things is widespread in the US, then it does seem pretty low to prey on those with quite shaky backgrounds to join up and earn a buck and diploma for God and country.
However, the view of the marines and for that matter any other military force witnessed here are quite simplistic and uneducated. A lot of people owe who they are to the forces, my family no exception and potentially myself too. So to see them as just people who spend their days charging machine gun emplacements is far from reality.
Though I must admit, the MARINE or Muscles Are Required, Intelligence Not Essential acronym is damn funny. Before you think of flaming, that came from a Royal Marine Commando friend.

Oh, we've chuckled over that and others about armed services branches quite a few times in the Mess. Unlike the comment in the OP, it's not derogatory. Aye, the servicemen and women all have their favourite jokes. That one was relayed actually by a friend based at HMS Neptune (if only because I forget the name of the SSN he serves on).Edi wrote: Oh, we've chuckled over that and others about armed services branches quite a few times in the Mess. I've known a fair few my age who dislike the forces. All I can say is they should look into them more or even talk to those that have served or are serving and find out what it's really about and then see if they can criticise them so blatantly for their basic mission.

True enough. The best Finnish ones just don't translate, but for example the Finnish word for sappers and combat engineers is often twisted so that they are referred to as what would be something like "house mouse" in English if you wanted to retain context (pioneeri -> pinohiiri, pino = pile/stack & hiiri = mouse). The English speakers get to have more fun with acronyms...Admiral Valdemar wrote:Aye, the servicemen and women all have their favourite jokes. Most of them are probably making their arguments out of total ignorance. One benefit of universal conscription here is that we hear little of that bullshit, and some twat who lives with their head in fantasyland usually gets a big dose of reality when they open their flaps... It's often like watching a ton of bricks falling on someone, and there are few punches held back most of the time, as the majority of these idiots are people who opted out of military service and did the pansy civil service version instead (though not all of those who do it are idiots, obviously).Admiral Valdemar wrote:I've known a fair few my age who dislike the forces. Most British ones concern just picking on the forces you're not a part of (army vs. air force vs. navy) or the NAAFI, which is the mess hall food service, though it's not all that bad.Edi wrote: True enough. The most prevalent type is the radicalist liberal pacifist who sees no need for a military since the world looks so lovely through those rose tinted glasses and the Green Party proposal for no navy, but just a coastguard for defence is simply super. I think Shakkara is the extreme here by which others are gauged. She doesn't have a clue and if she was ever drafted, I'd expect her to last not more than 5 minutes, same with a dozen students I can name. Most of them are probably making their arguments out of total ignorance. Though I do know one girl who was in the ATC and just doesn't like the idea of discipline in the forces. But that's her mentality at fault.
Or rather, just open his eyes since advertising is probably the biggest damn industry on the planet now and finding job adverts isn't all that hard. There're shop windows full of vacancies and any magazine in a specialist field like New Scientist or Edge will advertise jobs.Joe wrote:You need to read a University newspaper sometime. Aurum, just go to a job fair with a stack of resumes and don't whine about companies that don't advertise in an easy manner for lazy you.

Incidentally, the best jobs are sometimes not even advertised. If you really want a decent career, then you'll have to work for it. Just because you get qualifications or whatever, doesn't mean the companies will start addressing their correspondences directly to you. I have searched the job section of many science magazines for months and been to numerous job fairs. You should do likewise.
This nation isn't without faults and some of them are glaring. But I didn't just mention college benefits (look at everything in red) There, do I have your attention
Okay, so the 3 free meals is weak. Still, there is a package of benefits there and there are MOS's that aren't combat arms. Although if you bomb the ASVAB you're pretty much destined to carry a rifle. If you can't fire said rilfe then you're a cook...

Rich old dudes wage wars, young poor dudes die in 'em .... we hardly invented that truism.
Service can be a life-changing step up the economic ladder for some, a shit sandwich for some, and a life cut off too short for still others.
I'm not bothered by the commercials, I'm bothered by the occasional (and by no means representative) recruiter that bullshits recruits on what they're signing up for, the recruiting equivalent of a used car salesman.
Anyone who serves has my thanks. Anyone who preys upon that willingness to serve should rot in the lowest level of the Underworld.

Re: What other Jobs advertise?
Well, depending on what you're looking for (you haven't mentioned your qualifications or types of jobs you might look for) you may have to move to a better job market.Tom_Aurum wrote:Okay, so the only jobs I've ever seen advertised are, quite literally, the worst jobs in the universe.
Oh and about resumes, not that I'm saying you won't or anything, but take the time to do it right and professionaly. A business teacher of mine mentioned how a boss of his would just turn down resumes by the dozens because ofspelling errors. The point illustrated is that you're always going to have multiple people vying for a job. A potential employer isn't going to take a careful eye when there's just a homogenous band of potential hirees.
You're basically pimping yourself out there. Cockiness is to be avoided if possible but confidence can't be sacrificed (well, that's more of an interview tip I suppose). Hope this helps.
Lol, this thread in particular reminds me of just how cynical we all are.
And about recruiters BSing, while you merely know of this in sort of an abstract way as a civilian, once you get into Basic Training you actually get to see the rotten fruit of such ventures. Oh yeah, and I learned in Basic asthma is infectious More recruiter BS. It's im-fucking-possible to BS the CS chamber
I know I'm not helping my position or anything, but I'm not going to apologize for bullshit when I see it. I just wanted to convey that the military isn't the worst job in the world.
