Alternative Voting Schemes

Post by Jalinth »

In BC, a referendum is coming in May to change from our current system (first past the post) to the Single Transferable Vote (STV).
Here is the scope. +www.citizensassembly.bc.ca/public

Basically, STV is a form of proportional represent where multimember seats (in BC, they are taking about seats as small as 2 for rural ridings to up to 7 for urban areas) are divided based on voters rankings.

Basically, you end up with members tied to a community (and who do not come off of some party list) but who represent more diverse interests in that community.

Wondering whether anyone on the board has any experience with this system (apparently it is used in Ireland, and exists in Australia and other countries in a limited form) or other proportional representative systems and what their views are - good/bad/ugly.
