LinkMercer Island police shoot man in stolen car
Mercer Island police shot one man and were hunting for a second man this morning after a chase on Interstate 90 led to a scuffle and a stolen patrol car, police said.
The wounded man was taken to Harborview Medical Center, and was expected to survive, Mercer Island police Sgt. Lance Davenport said.
The episode began about 2 a.m. on Mercer Island, when an officer spotted the two men driving erratically, Davenport said. The officer followed the car as it left the island going west toward Seattle on I-90.
In Seattle, the men left the freeway at Rainier Avenue South, then turned around and headed east on the I-90 express lanes, Davenport said. Then the fleeing car stopped inside the Mount Baker Tunnel.
When the Mercer Island officer tried to contact the men, a scuffle broke out with one of them, Davenport said. During the melee, the second man jumped in the officer's patrol car, and the first man was also able to hop in.
Davenport said it is standard practice to leave a patrol car unlocked during a traffic stop because officers need to be able to get back in the car quickly.
As the two men were driving away in the stolen patrol car, they drove at the stranded officer, Davenport said. The officer shot out both front tires of his own patrol car. None of his shots hit the men.
Nonetheless, the two men drove the crippled car east, back to Mercer Island, where they were confronted by another Mercer Island officer at 77th Avenue Southeast and North Mercer Way, Davenport said.
The officer fired two shots, wounding one of the men. The second man ran off.
Police on the island were still looking for him this morning. They were hoping anyone who saw anyone or anything unusual would call the police.
Meanwhile, The express lanes on I-90 from Seattle to Mercer Island were closed this morning while police investigate the scene.
Police said they are investigating the chain of events as two separate incidents. Seattle police are investigating the scuffle and patrol-car theft in the Mount Baker tunnel. Mercer Island police have asked Bellevue police to investigate the officer's shooting of the man on Mercer Island.
The names of the officers involved in the incident were not immediately released this morning.

LinkNEW YORK — A man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of killing an aspiring actress who previously worked in Seattle during a holdup last week on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Authorities did not immediately comment on when the 19-year-old suspect would be arraigned or if he had a lawyer.
Nicole duFresne, 28, of Brooklyn, was allegedly shot during a crime spree by the man and some friends, police said. Earlier, the group allegedly tried to rob a man at gunpoint, but he fought off the attackers.
About an hour later, duFresne was leaving a bar with her fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, and another couple when they were approached by the group, one of whom demanded money, police said.
Witnesses told investigators one of the assailants grabbed for the purse of duFresne's friend, Mary Ann Gibson, and the actress said, "What are you going to do, shoot us?" One of the men then fired a shot.
Never, ever ask a person with a gun that question.
You fucking idiot Chmee. She was trying to resist the robbers.
