64-bit processors
So I might be getting my hands on a 64-bit AMD chip and supporting motherboard on the cheap...I know it requires DDRRAM, but am I going to have to purchase new components like video cards or sound cards, or will it be compatible?

Re: 64-bit processors
Most AMD64-based motherboards use your standard AGP and PCI slots so you'll be fine there. You will need to use DDR SDRAM (as I think you noted), possibly in a dual-channel configuration to maximize performance. The Wookiee wrote:So I might be getting my hands on a 64-bit AMD chip and supporting motherboard on the cheap...I know it requires DDRRAM, but am I going to have to purchase new components like video cards or sound cards, or will it be compatible?
For the moment you won't be able to operate the chip in 64-bit mode unless you run Linux but it is plenty fast in 32-bit mode. In the future you could get XP64 if you wanted to run 64-bit applications.

I've heard XP-64 will be OEM only, but you will be able to trade in XP-32 for it. http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=7545phongn wrote:Most AMD64-based motherboards use your standard AGP and PCI slots so you'll be fine there. I've also heard bad things about Nocona, like how it's currently not able to run Win64. Anyway, it also lacks the integrated memory controller.

Re: 64-bit processors
While it will probably be OEM for a while (biulding a driver base before full release), you just need to buy a network cable/mouse or the like to qualify to buy it under a OEM licence.Pu-239 wrote:I've heard XP-64 will be OEM only, but you will be able to trade in XP-32 for it. http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=7545

Re: 64-bit processors
Yes. XP64 for AMD64 is OEM only, probably to prevent idiots from buying the 64-bit version on their 32-bit processor.Pu-239 wrote:I've heard XP-64 will be OEM only, but you will be able to trade in XP-32 for it. http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=7545
Nocona has AMD64 support kinda hacked on, the design is still inherently a 32-bit CPU.I've also heard bad things about Nocona, like how it's currently not able to run Win64. Anyway, it also lacks the integrated memory controller.
