Freespace 2

Post by Pu-239 »

I've heard that it's legal to redistribute Freespace 2. In that case, can anyone upload it to a server and leave it there for a short period so I can download it to my server (not going to distribute again- it's just more convenient to download it to my server rather than having to leave the file on the source for 150 hours (3 months, since I can't download all the time) to transfer it to my desktop ...)?

It is indeed legal to distribute it.

Wait, I thought Interplay was still charging $50 for it (in a re-release), and that only the source code was freely distributable, not the models and mission files. When did this happen?

Alas, Interplay is no more.

FYI, apparently it was legal to redistribute it when Interplay was running anyhow(they (Interplay) basically said to "give copies to your friends.")

this site, www.the-underdogs.org has most(but not all) games listed in its directories.

you can get freeware from it too.(including Freespace 2 in a zip file, but it is a 200+ mb download!)

I need the full ISO. I can't get the rip working with the Linux port.

Isn't there a bittorrent somewhere?

Well, provided downloading it's legal, here. Mods may delete if this violates TOS.

No, it's been legal for some time to redistribute Freespace 2. Interplay's re-release is for people who want the manual and such.

Thanks. It's downloading at a slow and steady 7KB/s on the server, but at least I can leave that on 24/7 unlike dialup.

What are .cue files? What are the contents of that torrent? Also, I get gibberish when opening files in the files that are already downloaded, like the readme. Is this normal?

.cue and such files are type of CD images. Most CD burning programs should be able to read them to burn onto CD, or you can use programs like Daemon Tools to emulate them on your harddrive.

Also, are you sure you've have actually downloaded those files completely?

So you have to download the entire torrent to see a file?

Can you mount a cue like you would an ISO?

Not necessarily. I don't know what particular bit torrent client you are using, but I know for sure that if you are using BitTornado you can check on the progress of the individual files (marked as "Done", when the file is complete).

IIRC they come in pairs (.bin and .cue), and some of them with more, but yeah you mount them like ISO.

Hmm... I'm in luck. There's a program to convert bin/cue to ISO (Linux can't mount bin/cue, since it is not a filesystem). I'm using the official Linux client from bitconjurer.

There's also a Linux port, but it doesn't support sound in cutscenes or mission briefings (all the sounds/voices/music in the missions themselves work fine, though.)

I don't know anyone who does. And I'm a rather pathetic individual who has almost no contact with the outside school other than the internet and school.

*ahem*

*holds up all three CDs*

If you were to send me three blank CDs....I could arrange for you to have your own copy if you catch my drift...
