Spot The Phishing Phraud

Post by Crayz9000 »

Can you tell which ones are phishing for information and which ones are legitimate?

For the reference, I got 10/10. It's actually easy if you know what to look for in email scams.

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

8/10- I rely on email headers and URLs (actual URL, not the one that is displayed) to tell the difference.

And I, too, usually rely on the URL's (open the actual web site, check the URL you're at, check the URL you *should* be at for PayPal/eBay/Your Bank/etc, and if you're still suspicious check what site the images are linked from, as well).

Bullshit test.

* I don't know if I am supposed to subscribe to any all or some of those services.

* I don't know under what name I am used if I signed up on those services.

* I canot see the headers in the mail

* I can't check the links in the "mail"

I got 8/10, but would have got 10/10 if they hadn't "genericized" the e-mails. One I thought was fraudulent only because it said your credit card set to expire in 2008 is expiring soon, and the other I thought was legimite because the link pointed to the actual compnay site, but I couldn't click on it and find the real address it took me to.

Guys, that's what View Source is for. You can do it with emails too.

I got ten out of ten, which surprised me.

Basically, if it asks you for any information, it's BS. If it's just giving you info, it's legit.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

9 out of 10. . . only one that got me was the citibank asking me to verify my account. once per month seemed fishy to me, though i always think of verification as simply clicking the link in the email and it's verified. it didnt' really give much more info beyond that. otherwise i typically tell spammy email by the headers, sending address and content of the body. if it doesn't have a header i don't recognize or am suspicious about i typically delete it as spam.

No header information in View Source.

But then again I am very causious about e-mail so far no mail has fooled me, but there is always the first time for everything...

It's not about the header information, though if you're really careful you can spot problems there too. It's about where the links point.

They disabled the links in the quiz, but you can still see where the original ones pointed. They didn't point to actual websites -- they pointed to carefully masqueraded phishing sites.

6/10. Of course, I really don't keep track of this sort of stuff. If I was any less informed of e-mail scams, I'd probably be checking out the spam mail promising a 10 inch penis.
