Printing, samba, kernels (Mandrake 10.0) questions

Post by Spyder »

Does anyone here know where I can get a PPD file for an epson R210? Trying to install one under Mandrake 10 but it doesn't seem to have that model listed. I didn't get very far with linuxprinting.org.

Hrm. You could try updating Foomatic (that's the printer database) and Gimp-print. I don't know what they have updated, but I know that Mandrake 10.1 will be coming out shortly (I'm already running it).

It's supported by gimp print, from what a quick google tells me.

Ok, installed gimp print...cool. make install worked...apparently. Umm..I'm a little lost. The printer is actually attached to a WindowsXP machine on the network. I set up an Epson CX3100 that's attached to another machine using the mandrake config thingie and that works ok. I assume I need to do something manually for gimp-print?

Ok, running from the Mandrake Control Center, you need to tell the Add Printer wizard that you're adding an SMB printer. It will then scan the network, and if that doesn't find it, fill in all the fields that it gives you. You should be able to find out that information from your Windows machine.

Drivers should be less of an issue for a shared printer if hooked up to the windows machine... at least I think so.

Anyway I don't bother having samba share the printers, since Win2k supports IPP, and I just configure it to use http://down:631/classes/printer . ("down" is the hostname of my linux box, "up" and "back" are the windows machines- you have to add a class with the printer you want to use in order to share printers this way though- I've also edited the hosts file of every computer to allow the usage of names instead of IPs). I still use Samba for networked file access though, but doing things this way means one less thing to have to figure out.

It's better to find an RPM instead of compiling yourself, unless you know how to package or you know how to use GNU stow, since ./configure && make && make install does not guarantee the ability to use make uninstall.

I don't think that's right. I know from experience that you can't share a printer from a windows 98 machine to an XP machine without having the appropriate drivers on both machines. (XP machine to XP machine however only recquires drivers on host.)

That's what I did to get the CX3100 working. The problem with the R210 is where you get to selecting the driver for the printer. The closest driver it finds is for an EPSON 2200 which I'm pretty sure uses a totally different colour system. It has the option of installing a manufacturer supplied PPD file which as far as I can tell the manufacturer doesn't supply. I tried Pu-239's solution of installing gimp-print, which I did but have now run into a "now what?" scenario.

I was actually wondering how the uninstallation proceedure was handled for programs compiled from source.

In the "Add Software" section of MCC, you should be able to install gimp-print (there's a search option, search for it). It's in the Mandrake CDs.

You should have the package samba-swat installed first: that's the Samba Web Administration Tool. Once that's installed, go to http://localhost:901, log in as root, and you should be able to configure Samba.

Mind you, SWAT has a minor vulnerability (bad character handling, IIRC) in versions < 3.0.5, so you should probably upgrade Samba to the latest via the mdk update tool while you're at it.

Cool, got it. ...While I've got a good thread running;

If I'm installing mdk10 on an Athlon3200 that's running 1024mb of RAM should I be using vmlinuz-i686-up-4GB? Also, can you tell it not to search for SATA drives?

After using mdk10 on my secondary machine for a while I'm putting it on my main box.

Isn't there an athlon kernel too? You might want to run that. And you don't need the >4GB support. Try recompiling the kernel to leave out SATA- display all of your hardware information, and I'm sure someone here can create the appropriate .config file, or even create an RPM since the kernel already a premade spec file for doing so. However this might be because Mandrake uses discover or kudzu and have nothing to do with the kernel (I configure my hardware manually, so I don't know).

Ok,
Athlon 3200+
Albatron KX18D Pro II motherboard (NFORCE 2)
1024mb DDR 400mhz (Ledgend)
2x Western Digital 120gb hard disks
GF4ti4200 graphics card
1x NEC DVD-RW
1x Lite-On DVD/CD-RW

anything else?

While we're at it, I've managed to kill X. Comes up with a "no screens found" error. That started happening after I ran mandrake update. I've done this before and reformatted the / partition which seemed to fix it but I'd like to know if there's a better way to fix it. Sorry if I'm starting to pester.

You need to reinstall/recompile the nvidia driver. Make sure your kernel headers are installed.

Fixed, cool. Thanks!

I'm starting to feel a little guilty for the constant n00bishness.

If I haven't yet used up all my "ask dumb questions free" cards...
I seem to have screwed the sound system while trying to get the center and LFE channels working. Now only one program at a time seems to be able to access the sound sound card (which I think is due to them trying to access different sound servers, though I'm not 100% sure on that). If my hypothesis is correct, what's the best way to force applications to use a specific sound server? Also, any idea what would be causing the original problem? It recognises the "line in = surround channels" but not the "mic = center/LFE". I checked alsamixer and the setting for mic-center/LFE was set to what it should be. I'm using an nforce2 chipset.

edit: After closing down totem kopete bombarded me with a series of new message notifications, and the sound config tool played it's test sound. It appears that sounds sent to the server are being spooled.

Run "ps ax" while you experience the problem and tell me what you see. Also, apps vary in how to configure which sound server to use, or whether to use one at all- I use ESD because I like independent volume control for each app, though you can get along with no sound server- make sure OSS compatibility modules are installed though.

I found that XMMS had configurable output whereas totem and kopete don't. Although I did find that XMMS will crash under OSS but works fine with ALSA (apart from the software mixing thing).

This is the output from ps ax while running xmms, some messages were coming through on kopete.

[mark@localhost mark]$ ps ax

The hypothesis is wrong, since the only sound server running is artsd.

Kopete (judging from the 'k') is a native KDE app and uses the arts server, while Totem is a GNOME app which uses ESD. Both should work without any servers running at all (you should be using the ALSA drivers- some OSS drivers do not allow more than one program accessing the sound card, hence the need for sound servers. ALSA does not need this... I'm sleepy right now, will check tomorrow afternoon.
