You don't need a 256MB card. Well, for me it came down to one choice:
Do I get Half-life 2 or Doom 3?
I chose Half-life 2. I'll probably get Doom 3 sometime down the road (lord knows I'm turning into a FPS junkie), HL2 gets first pick.
