just simple book-keeping. I want to get off my butt and see where my expenses are going. That way, I can plan how many days I wanna work part time, how many days I need to complete some courses and finally finish up my driving and the like.

If you have microsoft office, exel should work for you. If you don't have microsoft office, a good free alternative is http://www.openoffice.org. Thats what I use and i'm pretty satisfied with it.

Then just use Excel or one of the many other alternatives.

Easy to figure out(some more so then others) and good bookkeeping.

Excel is fine for your needs. Even a pen and paper would work for notes to be later transfered to Excel.
