Out of curiousity I searched for the archaic "Internet Provider" term and I note several firms continue to describe themselves as "Internet Providers", and even more curiously, some title themselves "Internet Provider" and then use "ISP" as an acronym.

I have feeling they didn't say "Yes, we an IP." they probably said "Yes, we're an Internet Provider"

IP is most commonly accepted as Internet Protocol.

I guess if he continued to do that and was spamming people then he could have gotten TOSed.

I wouldn't have TOSed him for that though, I would have just sent a warning. That's even lower than a minor violation to me, but oh well AOLs policy probably has changed.

get Trillian. it lets you register an AIM name without worrying about aohell.

Indeed, Trillian will let you use an existing AIM screen name as well. You can also sign up for just about every chat program really (ICQ, IRC, MSN, & Yahoo). I've been using it for about a year now and love the progam.

Will it let you use a name that someone else is already using, though? My username is frozen by AOL. Won't even let me use AIM with it because we canceled our dialup service, even though AIM is free.

You can't unfortunately use a previously registered name, at least not till AOL finally puts the name back in the pool (six months to a year I think). So you'll just have to create a new one, unfortunately. Trillian works as an alternate to the AIM program but the names still have to be unused on AIM/AOL.

What was the purpose of that search? All you did was prove to me that typing in Internet Providers brings up ::gasp:: references about Internet Providers.

We're talking about the acronym "IP" remember? Which my search pretty much shows IP in computer terms stands for Internet Protocol.

While ISP in computer terms stands for Internet Service Provider or Internet Provider.

You might think that being the oldest ISP in the UK would give it some credibility and it does, however the ISP (IP - Internet Provider is more accurate) itself is simply not up to date enough to be of much use to anybody but the newbie/less aware Internet users. For the price you pay there isn't much on offer and considering that the price is lower than most, that's a pretty tall statement.

In any case, none of this really very pedantic quibbling has anything to do with Rogue's troubles, which I happily note are over.

Use Miranda IM. Best IM program out there, period.

It supports damn near every IM protocol out there (unlike Trillian which only supports 4), doesn't nag you to get a "pro" version, and its open source.

In that case I'll just end with this. IP means Internet Provider to someone who is a technological dinosaur.

Also, as you already pointed out the term is obsolete. Which to me seems like a concession on your behalf.

And don't say bad things about pedantic quibbling......it's what we do!
