Using a normal ac adapter for the playstation

Post by Hamel »

I'm talking the original, not the PSOne.

Some lady at Walmart told me it could be done, but the AC in looks proprietary to me.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

It's not, You can get multipurpose A/C adapters with the cross-type connectors and adjustable voltage settings, if all else fails, the voltage should be listed just below the input on the back of the playstation. In may experiecne, if it says 14v or 12 v or whatever, by an AC adapter of tht tyupe, and the connector is the correct size. I think they are directly related. If you want to be safe, use the adjustable fancy adapter, since after your PS dies, you can use it on something else.

The original PSX has an internal AC adaptor and external cable that plugs into the wall. The adaptor is built into the console itself and can't be replaced except from another unit of the same model (it changes even between model lines of the PSX, so, say, an SCPH-7500's internal adaptor won't work in an SCPH-1000's). If you're talking about the cord from the wall that connects with the adaptor in the back of the console, that is a proprietary connector. The PS2 cable is identical to the one used by the original PSX, so you can find and use one of those instead if the cable's the problem. IIRC, the PSOne switched to an external AC adaptor, so replacing that is much more straightforward -- just do as Chardok suggests.

If it's the same cable as the PS2, it's also the same cable used by hundreds of different models of DVD players and other consumer electronics. Should be easy as pie to find a replacement.

It is a standard 2-pin figure 8 AC cable.

Same one as the PS2 and Dreamcast

It's not a figure 8, it has a squared end.

Though I have to say the Megadrive was the king of interchangeable peripherals, not only was the AC adapter standard (mine died, and I use the AC adapter from a Sinclair ZX-81), but the control pads used a standard Kempston interface, so they could be used on any Amiga, Spectrum, or Atari computer (and vice versa, as long as there were enough buttons for the MD)
