Pop-up Blocker

Post by The Dark »

Does anyone have good sites for free pop-up blockers that work? For some reason, Proxomitron isn't working for me any more, and it's getting &^%# annoying.

Thanks in advance, y'all

Or if for some reason you can't stomach mozilla/firefox, get Opera. Though I personally prefer ff, I do know lots of people who swear by the O.

Opera was nice, but I can't stand the ad banner.

Back when I was using IE, I found Window Shades to be a great free pop-up blocker.

It even has a list for sites you want to allow to open new windows in your browser.

Mozilla's pop-up blocker is just a tad more strict, but FireFox is a good alternative if you don't want to use Mozilla's build-in mail client.

However, if you want to take it a step further, download the adblock extention (works in both Mozilla suite and FireFox). This extention will become your best friend when it comes to blocking web advertisements.

FireFox rules. Download FireFox (http://www.mozilla.org/), then download the Adblock extension and you can even block banner ads...
Plus tab browsing rules.

Install Windows XP service pack 2 if you are using WindowsXP.

Also run a spyware scan using all the usual subjects.

I decided on the FireFox/Adblock combo, since I'm stuck using ME (XP is asking for trouble on our network, there's about 30 virii around that affect XP but not ME, thanks to our amateur virus-breeders here). So far, so good.

XP SP2 is considerably more secure, thank goodness :)

Yeah, they made the "Windows File Protection" considerably more anal than ever. (which is a good thing)

For those of you who must use IE for one reason or another and cannot use XP SP2, the Google Toolbar is a fairly effective popup blocker.

Unfortunatley, advertisers have found away to get around the google toolbar's popup blocking or just decide to use flash ads instead (which are just as, if not more, annoying).

There are third-party programs out there that can do the job. Unfortunately, the only ones I really liked are either out of date or are no longer made.

The google toolbar will block SOME of the popups, just don't expect it to block every single one.
