Alright, who here has a Dreamcast?

Alright, who here has a Dreamcast?
I'm thinking of getting one, almost solely for the purpose of getting Marvel vs Capcom 2. The other versions of the game are supposedly fuxed, while this one is arcade perfect due to the DC being very close to Sega's Naomi tech.
Questions coming:
1) Where is the best place to buy a DC from, and does Best Buy or Circuit City have them? I see them at Amazon.com, but that's actually through 3rd parties. Doesn't seem safe. Same question for games, too.
2) I've heard that I can use a PC monitor as video output for the Dreamcast. Is this true? If true then I'm in heaven.
3) How long does that silly Dreamcast controller last? It sure doesn't look effective for fighting games or much of anything. Any better controllers or possibly adaptors that allow controllers from different systems to be used?
4) Besides Marvel vs Capcom 2, what other games should I consider getting? Don't say Soul Caliber because I'm not really interested in floaty 3d fighting games.

1. Where you can find it...since production stopped...hopefully you can find an old new one.
2. Unsure.
3. Quite some time actually...both of mine has lasted since the dawn of the system.
4. Guilty Gears, CVS1 and 2(if you can acquire number two) and hell there's just a host of older games...though a tad hard to find.

According to the people at the shoryuken.com forums, the ps2 version is missing some arcade glitches, has new game freezing glitches and game mechanics changes, has horrible slowdown problems, is missing character frames, and the sound is muffled.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:We have one.
Although, didn't they later release MvC2 onto PS2?
Sega's consoles have always been superior in 2d anyway

you can always check out gamestop.com for older console systems and games. i've found 'em to be an incredibly handy resource for that sort of thing.

If you like RPGs, check out Skies of Arcadia when you get the system. It's like the recent Final Fantasy games, but with a more interesting setting and without the annoying cliches, nonsense plot, etc, and with more cool stuff like battles between flying airships firing cannons

Yeah, but you could get the GCN version, which is just as good.Arthur_Tuxedo wrote:If you like RPGs, check out Skies of Arcadia when you get the system. Re: Alright, who here has a Dreamcast?
Those stores doubtfully would still have one. Game Stop or some other local chain that buys used equipment should easily have one or two in great shape.Hamel wrote:1) Where is the best place to buy a DC from, and does Best Buy or Circuit City have them? Yes. It requires a VGA cable IIRC, but I've only seen 3rd paryt ones around. Only time I saw it in action they hooked it up with just a monitor and no sound system, ergo no sound. Be sure to take speakers into accout for this setup.
Mine seem to be working fine, and I've mashed them in MvC2 for maybe 30-40 hours at the very least, plus a dozen other games I own. They look a little funny, but they're very ergonomic and rugged.3) How long does that silly Dreamcast controller last? It sure doesn't look effective for fighting games or much of anything. I'd say some of my own reccomendations, in order after MvC2 (and excluding SC): Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, and Phantasy Star Online (the free one. Repetitive, but it's got some quaint replayability).

I used to have a Dreamcast, but I sold it for a fraction of what I bought it for after I gave up on the possibility of ever finding a decent game for the system.
You can hook the DC up to a monitor with a special adapter, but you'll be stuck at 60Hz. If that refresh rate gives you headaches the way it does for me, it might be best just to stick with a TV.

I got mine and most the accessories from Electronics Botique. Good buy and they've got a decent warrantee on them (costs five bucks more but worth it secondhand). They'll be rare since they're now collector's peices but they're one of the best bets. Same for games and accessories.
Actually, Amazon has a good guarantee. If nothing else they'll refund a lemon if you get it. I've got a few hard to find games through them and never had a single problem.I see them at Amazon.com, but that's actually through 3rd parties. Doesn't seem safe. Same question for games, too.

Re: Alright, who here has a Dreamcast?
Gamestop, or at least the Gamestops in my area, no longer carry DC games or hardware in the stores (online only purchases). My local EB has some games, but no consoles (some accessories however, full inventory online).Hamel wrote:1) Where is the best place to buy a DC from, and does Best Buy or Circuit City have them? Yes, I use a third-party adaptor for my Dreamcast (which I had to acquire on eBay). However, not all games support VGA output (though every game not supporting VGA-output in my collection can be "tricked").Hamel also wrote:2) I've heard that I can use a PC monitor as video output for the Dreamcast. I've had no problems with the two DC controllers (first party) I have, though I've owned them less than a year (and one of them was brand new).Hamel then wrote:3) How long does that silly Dreamcast controller last? Adaptors for non-DC controllers exist, check out Lik Sang for details.
Not sure of your interests, but the Sonic Adventures (1 and 2) might be worth a look (my only complaint is that the camera is crappy at best). I'd also check out Starlancer, Seaman (if you can find it with a microphone), and maybe either Crazy Taxi.Hamel later wrote:4) Besides Marvel vs Capcom 2, what other games should I consider getting? What?!? How could I be a dedicated console gamer, without owning what could possibly be the GREATEST console machine ever?!?
First off, it shouldn't be hard at all to find one for like $20. Rhino's, EBs, Softwares, Ebay. Pretty damn easy. Amazon is still a good place. Just get it from a retailer on there. Same with games. Anyone that does used games is bound to have a shitload of DC games. If you think buying a used system is bad, trust me, unless this thing has coffee stains on it, you won't have much to worry about. I'll explain in a minute.
For the PC monitor question, you have to buy a VGA box, which probably isn't hard to find, if you look to Ebay. They used to be in high abundance, but since I never needed one, I didn't look into it much.
Now for your controller question which will help you understand why buying a used one off of Amazon.com isn't bad at all.
I got mine on 9/9/99 the day of launch. I had Marvel vs Capcom, then subsequently MvC 2 (which I still have and was playing recently). I have beaten, banged, and abused the hell out of my controls. Remember, thier your direct connection to your game, and they only way you can execute your motives, they will be put to the test. For this reason, I only buy FIRST PARTY controllers. Every third party has sucked balls. In fact i was playing earlier tonight with some third parties that looked brand fucking new, and weren't worth shit. I have roughly 8 Dreamcast controllers. Three standards, two reds, one green, one yellow, and one blue. I managed to break one of the red ones somehow. Must have dropped something on it. All the others work perfectly fine, and once again. like I said, I abuse the shit out of mine during gameplay. My Dreamcast has been lugged around from place to place, and it works like a charm. Btw, MvC and MvC2 in my circle of friends and guests, are probably the second most played games of all my consoles. Only behind Quake III on the DC. (Yes, it's that damn good).
Games, eh? Soul Caliber. I don't care what you fucking think. You are sorely wrong on this one. I hate 3D fighters. This game simply kicks ass. Like I've already mentioned. Quake III. I have it on the PC. I play the shit out of it on PC. I also have it on the Dreamcast, and everyone loves to play it. Granted the majority of the time they just provide me with an insurmountable supply of frags, they still love it. This is controller love here too. I use the DC controller for this game, and I rock. When the DC online thing was going on, I got online and rocked a few PC lovin', cable usin', mouse/keyboard whores a few times with it, until I got the Dreamcast keyboard and mouse. There was an adapter for using your regular PC mouse, but I'm sure if you want one that bad, the DC ones will be cheap as shit. Has a wheel.
Back to the games. Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Ecco the Dolphin, Quake III, Jedi Power Battles (the PSX version sucks balls. This version, is quite simply one of the best Star Wars games. It also harkens back to the Arcade side scroller games of TMNT past). Episode I Racer, if you get a lightgun, House of the Dead 2. That's all I have left in my collection right now. There's a ton of great games on it though. I know they had a Rainbow 6 on there, Skies of Arcadia (sadly I never played unlike everyone else, who love it), Giga Wing which is like the old top down flyer's from the 8/16 bit era. There's a ton of them out there, which are incrediable games.

I ordered a Dreamcast and MvC2 from Amazon last night. Hopefully I get the package within a few days. Only got one controller since no one else around here plays fighting games~

I just did a huge post on a brandnew site of a local get together. I'm actually the first one to post there.

Pretty meager site, just go there and click on message boards. Title is Dreamcast.

Yeah, Bangai-O is tons of blow 'em up fun! There's an insane amount of crap to destroy. A must have for Treasure fans!
I loved (and still do) my DC back in the day. Instant party machine with games like San Fransico Rush 2049 and Toy Commander! And don't forget Gauntlet Legends!
There's a game or two I still need to track down, like Hydro Thunder.
I read that ports of SF Rush 2049 and Hydro Thunder are due out for the PS2 sometime soon.
And for those fighting games (except some of the 3d ones), I HIGHLY recommend that Sega Saturn/PSone to DC controller adapter! If you're one of the lucky few to still own a Sega Saturn, you can use it's controller!
