I broke Xfree 86...
I was manually editing the x-free 86 config file so that it would be set up with the proper resolution and refresh stats for my moniter and now it gives me a parsing error when I try and start an x-server. So I have two questions. How do I edit it from the command line, and how should the lines about refresh rates read if my moniter has a horizontal range of 30-85 kHz and a vertical range of 50-160 Hz. Also, I have a built in N-Force 2 and a PSC703 on pci in my system. I'm trying to use the PSC703 for my sound needs but I don't know what to do so my system will use it. One more thing, this may be a stupid question but here it goes anyway, is it possible to launch firefox from the command line or would I be restricted to a text based browser?

You can use a text-based text editor to edit files from the console. Vi and Emacs are the most popular, but they take a while to learn. Nano or Joe would probably better suit your needs for now.
You can run Firefox from the commandline, if it's an xterm or something similar. It needs X-Windows to run, though. Try Links. It'll run from the commandline and, if you've got the console framebuffer set up, you'll still be able to browse graphically.
As for the rest of your post, I'm not sure. I tend to avoid poking at my X config files once I've got a working setup.

You didn't back up your old config file? Back up your current one and then try xf86config. It can't mess up your config any worse than it already is, if you can't use it. And you can always copy pieces of the old one on top of the new one if you need to.

This also might be a good opportunity to install X.org.
