Considering buying a DVD burner

Post by Hobot »

The prices are looking pretty good and I've got a fair number of videos I want to back up so I can free up some space on my harddrive.

Any recommendations towards the manufacturer and features?

NEC's burners are good.

Pioneer DVR-A08XL if you've got the money to spend. 16x DVD+R, 4x DVD-DL make for the all around best performing DVD burner on the market today. They aren't the cheapest option, but you get what you pay for.

Actually I've managed to find one for $115 Canadian ($137.44 after S&H, taxes and insurance) which seems like a good deal. Another plus is that it's black so it'll match my case =)

That's an excellent deal, I recently purchased one at Fry's for $160 US which is obviously quite a bit more.

Mine's OEM mind you, so that's probably why.

I'm gonna piss you off The Kernel by posting this:

NEC 16x Dual Layer burner - $69.00 with FREE shipping (FedEx Express Saver, which is 3-day business...usually arrives in two days)

The Pioneer is ~ $90 US according to Hobot's estimate, so that's not really that big a difference to pay for the quality of a Pioneer drive. Besides, I haven't read a review of this NEC drive yet and while I know the Pioneer has excellent overall quality, not all burners are built equal.

NEC's firmware apparently is quite good and some third parties are also constantly improving on it (custom write strategies matched to the disc, etc.)
