So does anyone actually play this anymore? Are there any good mods for it?

The story is excellent, the gameplay was good, but I never really got into it. I'm weird that way.

That said, I like the secret gnomish conspiracy the best.

There's a secret gnomish conspiracy? Fark, I thought I had found everything!

The story was great, the concept was good ... the graphics were bland.

I LOVE THIS GAME!

Still play it from time to time (in 40+ hour binges).

Not many mods got made for it unfortunately but the INSANE amount of variety in the main story and side-plots means I'm still finding new stuff.

SPOILER ALERT:

Yeah, the secret gnomish conspiracy to rule Arcanum by breeding a subservient race of "half-ogres" to serve as slaves and warriors in their name. YOu find out a lot about it by following "The Raven is in trouble" plotline.

Arcanum had a fantastic story and (I thought) pleasant graphics, but the combat system and balance among weapons, armor, spells, technology is one of the worst I've ever seen. Really ruined it for me. For example, the first spell you get in the game is the best direct damage spell. Everything else sucks. The second technological weapon you learn how to make is the best, and again everything else sucks. If you play turn based, then you get enough movement and attacks to kill everything onscreen in one turn, but so do the enemies. So if you go first, you win. If they go first, you die. It's a disgrace.

What spell and item are you refering to?

I myself was rather fond of the swiss-army-knife known as disintegrate. Locked door? What door?

It was extremely crap that mana regeneration didn't speed up if you had more mana, could take a couple of minutes till your mana was full again.

I'm talking about the first tier Necromantic spell, and the fast short sword.

I didn't mention disintegrate for brevity, but that's possibly the worst of all. It gives the ability to kill anyone or destroy anything in one hit with no chance for them to avoid or counter it.

I play it for the fun of technology. I got the lvl 100 patch, and invented EVERYTHING. I tracked down every blueprint and every item. I had a high charisma so I had a large party and EIGHT automotons.

For weapons, I had a flame thrower, a grenade launcher, and some really fun stuff.

I picked it up recently and am about a third of the way through. It's great, though I can only imagine how wacky multiplayer would be. I can see the flaws, but there're loads of great concepts as well. And it's really pretty funny at times.

I've got a few minor mods installed, which claim to fix some broken dialogue and options and upgrade the orc bandit \Molochean Hand encounters as you level-up
.

Does anyone know of any chain stores that might still have Arcanum? I was flat broke when it came out (and for a good deal of time afterward), and now that I have a job again, I can't find it anywhere.

Its available everywhere in the $20 (aus) Sierra Classics range, but if you can find the original box, get it. The manual is a hoot.

Master of Melee/Dodge, with Sword of Air, 20 Dex and Strength, and some insane chainmail...

Nothing can stand before me!

But its even funner playing through as a guy with shitty fighting skills but who's a really smooth speaker, so you can talk your way out of virtually all the battles (except random encounters...bring a half-ogre companion).

I had a female elf who sold her soul to a demon who killed EVERY fucking person she came across. I mean, she literally scoured the face of Arcanum of life. Not a very pleasant missie, then when the ultimate bad-dude tries to cut a deal, she kills him then takes his place... BWAHAHAHHA!

Also, the only blueprints you'll use more than once are the ones from the Explosives college/thingy/whatever . :?
