Card Suggestions

Post by Captain tycho »

I'm looking for a good gaming card for under 200 bucks. I have a 6600GT in mind, but I'm willing to hear other suggestions, in case there is something better in the same price range.

6600GT, or if you can't get one, a good 9800XT.

He gives you contradictory advice. First he says, "Don't listen to me," and then he says, "Listen to me!"

Odd.

Anyway, ignoring the jackass, I'd say to pick up either the 6600GT or the Radeon x700XT (it's supposedly going to be priced at $199, as well). I'd say pick up whichever hits the market first... benchmarks have them within spitting distance, so it doesn't really matter much.

Agreed, just stay away from the 9800XT. The new cards really are faster and if you need to wait a few weeks before you can get one (especially if you need an AGP card) I suggest you do so. They really are worth the wait.

Go for the 6600GT now, and when you have the cash, get a second one and SLI it to get double the performance. :) (Yes, benchmarks show an actual double performance gain when you SLI them.)

If you have a PC with two PCIe slots, you can put two Geforce 6600 GT cards in and get double the power (dual graphics cards).

Thats assuming that the video card is PCIe though which he probably won't be getting and I doubt that he has a dual PCIe x16 motherboard. But Praxis is right.

If he's not going to upgrade a long time the X700 will be underpowered, its allready losing out in benchs.
Then again, its colder and makes less noise.

Eh, the benchmarks I saw had the x700 being soundly whomped in Opengl games, and keeping up in Direct3D games. In my opinion, the two brands are so close that I'd think one should just buy the first one to become available.

Me, I have never used AA or AF yet. I don't really care to. Though my card ( EVGA Geforce FX 5600XT ) does support it.

While I have only recently started, even 2AA makes a nice difference to the eyes, esspecially eye strain.
