RPG's and what I hate about them

Post by Sam Or I »

In every one that I have played (non-online), right when you get your Characters to the uber awesome level, and want to use them, you fight the main boss and its over. I want to play with these characters that it took me for ever to create, not just fight the last guy. Very un-rewarding.

Just beat X-Men ledgends, thats why I am bitching. After the main story, the Characters should be locked, then should have random generated missions. AKA, on this level you have to go and defeat Sabertooth or some crap like that.

To be fair to the rest of the genre, X-Men Legends is the only game of it's direct kin I can think of that doesn't allow you to at least start again with the characters at the same level they were at the end of the game. Both Dark Alliance games and Champions of Norrath let you do so, Even Fallout:PoS manages it..

X-Legends should, at least, allow you to replay any level with any characters through the Danger Room (a fucking gift of a game structue if ever there was one). That would also mitigate the problem that by the time you get Psylocke you can use her about twice and after that it's all Sentinels, and "Hello Mental Resistance" despite how utterly HARD she actually is (250 damage + penetration x 7, without any equipment, Even the mighty Jean Grey has trouble matching that)

The sad thing about DA and DA2 is there's a couple of perfectly fine rationales for being able to continue characters. They could have the characters who beat the game on a lower setting replay the entire game at the higher settings and keep levelling up. Also, in DA2 they could let the characters take on the quests the other characters get and restock the dungeons a few times over. Hopefully, if they ever do a third DA game, they'll let players use characters from the other two.

I can think of a game that lets a player keep playing after finishing the main story, Might and Magic VI. The only problem is that when you finish all the monsters off, it takes a long time in-game for the world to restock.
For the glory of Gondor, I sack this here concession stand!

Which RPGs did you have in mind? In most console RPGs these days there are usually sidequests and such available for you to use your uber-powered characters in.

Another nice thing that is present in Final Fantasy X-2, the Chrono series, and no other games is the New Game Plus, which lets you go restart the game with all your uber-weapons and highly leveled up characters. Most RPGs don't have this, but all of them should.

How bout adventure games where you get t3h ub3r bl4st4 five minutes before the last boss? Or platformers where each upgrade makes previous weapons useless, and the last one is AT the final boss?

Its just bad pacing. We should all stop buying RPGs etc until they change; but that won't happen :)

Hey, be happy for a decent Marvel adventure game. Jesus, when was the last one?

Edit: Not involving Spiderman

The final fantasy games don't let you restart uber characters.

In a lot of Bioware games you can just reimport your high-level chars and play again from the start.

I disliked that about Super Robot Wars Alpha. great game, but I spend a long time convincing Rebi Tora to join me. She joins about 4 missions before the end, so I barely get to use her in battle >_<

While you don't keep the weapons, both Wild Arms Advanced Third and Shadow Hearts Covenant have the New Game Plus where you keep level and (for SHC) character-specific abilities (such as Anastasia's Album and Yuri's Fusion).

But yeah, a lot of RPGs do seem to let you create characters, but then you get to the last fight and that's it. Xenosaga's like that (well, Episode I is). AFAIK Star Ocean is like that (haven't actually been bored enough to finish it).

SHC's is a mixed bag. You do /not/ keep levels, and you only keep special abilities for SOME people. Karin's zero out as soon as you get the first one again, Yuri keeps his...it's wierd. You do keep all your crests, and all the special flavor equipment (Karin's special outfit, woo!), but not much else.
