Keep in mind an add in USB 2.0 PCI Card costs roughly.... ten bucks at last check

And if you want to know if you have USB 2.0 simply ask yourself what year did you buy your computer? After 2002? Probably

For those who are unaware of the promotional deal that iPod is currently doing, go to: freeipod.com

All you have to do is register yourself up and then register for one of the offers. Then, you get five others to do it and you get a free iPod. Its been proven to legitimately work and plus, I have had a dozen friends and their friends get one. On top of that, mine is coming in the mail :D

And all I had to do was register up for an offer to get 7 free CDs and buy only one (also pay S & H); what I paid in all for 8 CDs and an iPod: about $30.

Except for:
1) You have to wait a week or two, depending on what you choose.
2) You have to give your credit card number to someone.
3) You have to convince 5 friends to do it, not the easiest thing, and they'll be trying to convince THEIR friends.

So...people should drop hundreds on an overpriced gadget, just because getting it free/very cheap is...free/very cheap?

Note: Not overpriced relative to the competition, overpriced relative to what it is: Thank you, I'll buy a new video card, or a gig of DDR2-533, or someting useful, for that price.

Overpriced...for a 20 gigabyte portable hard drive and a processor capable of playing AIFF, MP3, and AAC in real-time, coupled with a 2-inch LCD? I wouldn't call it overpriced for what it is ;)

...well that makes one of us. Yeah, it's a neat little gadget. So is a P4 3.4 chip. Or a Radeon X700. Remind me again why I'd sacrifice buying one of the above to get a Walkman with delusions of grandeur?

If you don't want one then don't get it. I could turn that around and say that a P4 or Radeon won't play my music on-the-go either.

Obviously you're not even in the market for a portable music player, so why are you even posting in this thread?

Well, unless you carry your shit-hot PC around with you at all times along with monitor, keyboard, mouse etc, it's kind of silly to compare, really.

<holds out hand>"LOOK! I've got a p4 3.4 ghz chip!"

Kinda crap in comparison to:

<holds out hand>"LOOK! I've got 7183 songs on my ipod!"

Anyway, I had no idea they'd made 40 gig ipods, that's even enough to get all of my music on! I'm gonna get one in the new year.

How good are I-Pods really? I've heard good and bad reports about them. I currently use a RioRiot but i find it a little large and clunky and i'm considering getting a new player. Either a 20 gig I-Pod or a Rio Karma.

40? The iPod Photo goes to 60 gigabytes, and displays photo slideshows while playing music at the same time, and links up to the TV  The non-photo iPod only goes to 40 gigs, though.

Awesome. PC Magazine, PC World, MacWorld, and Mobile PC all rate it #1 player, followed by Creative Zen Touch in second. The iPod is possibly the lightest of all the 20-40 gig players, looks sweet, is very easy to use and sync, and is just plain cool

My iPod = never buy media ever again. I use it for work, I use it to move large files, I use it to play music, I use it to see in the dark. Its paid for itself in not-burning dvds full of files for people already.

Praxis - whats the stand like? I got a 4G so I've got the cables instead.

iPod photo - whats the go? Its much more expensive (although it is bigger) but if it can't play movies and have av-out... whats the point?

I'm not the one with the stand, you'll have to ask STOD.
iPod Photo- It's $100 more than the normal one. 40 gig iPod = $399, 40 gig photo iPod = $499.

It can play photo slideshows and music at the same time, has a color screen (Album art while you play the music, anyone? Solitaire in color? :) ), a more expensive battery (15 hours vs 12 hours), and it DOES have AV out. You can plug it into a TV and play slideshows.

It's handy if you have pics you want to show people on a big screen, plus play the music on the go. You can even buy a little SD/CF adapter for it, so you can stick your digital camera card into it and copy everything straight to the iPod. No more taking your laptop or extra cards on trips :)

But movie capabilities...I wish ;) Who's gonna watch movies on a 2 inch screen, anyway? I believe that was what Stevie jobs said.

Presumably the idea would be that you could hook up a hypothetical iPod/AV to your television and bring along a sort of mobile video library with you. I'm not quite sure if they could cram the hardware to play 640x480 MPEG in it, tho.

Yeah, I think that's the problem, the small processor.

You can still stick the MPEG's on it and play on your laptop, but unfortunately can't do that on the TV :s

W00t I mixed up posters, I am a fooling forumer. :)

I'm not sure how much processing (or buffer memory) you need to play movies. However I'm not suggesting playing movies on that screen - in fact, even looking at images on it strikes me as absurd - but rather turning the iPod into an all-around solution; I already use it as the primary input in my stereo and car. I'd love to replace the puter in my lounge with an iPod full of videos. On the other hand I've seen things that do this, and they are significantly larger than iPods.
