do yourself a favor and ditch IE completely. if you need a browser that works with IE only sites, then get maxthon's browser. it's effectively IE on steroids, offering tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, a built in proxy spoofer, and a translation utility for foreign language pages.

Nah.. IE stays as is. My sister uses it while I'm trying out FireFox.

I'm using Firefox too, I never got around to downloading it to see what the fuss was about, and my dad wouldn't have appreciated me changing default browsers, he has an issue with these things. But then my computer got a nasty little virus, and the nice guy who fixed our computer told us to use Firefox after. And I must say, it's great. The scrolling isn't as smooth as I like it, and turning on smooth scrolling just slows it down too much. Other than that, it's fantastic, better than IE ever was. But then, I suppose you folks have heard plenty of stories like man, haven't you? :D

I have installed Firefox, only today, ad set it as my default browser and I too have found it to be better than IE6. And it's nice not to have all the security issues. Does anyone know if there is a risk me just keeping IE on my computer? (if my attempt to wean my family onto Firefox doesn't work).

Unfortunately, IE is integrated into Windows in such a way that removing it ranges from the difficult to the impossible. Even if you've resolved to never use it again, you're stuck with it on your hard drive unless you decide to ditch Windows entirely (the "removal" option in the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog only removes its icons from your desktop and Start menu. The program itself is still there.)

so just get the google toolbar and stop whining about how much you don't like extra options in browsers then.

FireFox's system requirements: I'm using a Pentium 1 200Mhz with 96megs of RAM on Winblows 98. Should it work? I know I am under the requirements listed on the site. I am right now using M$IE6, though I am below the requirements for that, too.
it runs fine on my 333mhz system, with 64 megs of ram, so it might run on yours without too many problems.

Perhaps some sort of thread should be started to see which of us SDNetter's has the computer with the lowest specs. :P

You can try INET. It is a small browser I wrote that works on low end systems too.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Well, I just upgraded from Firefox 0.8 to 1.0. It seems a bit faster than before, and there are many more great extensions for it, like a nifty 'Paste Quote' one which adds that command to the context menu for text forms. It pastes the current clipboard contents with UBB quote tags around them, which is great for lazy people like me. :D

Unfortunately, I had to go hunting around for my favorite extension, Tabbrowser Extensions. Anyone who doesn't use it yet, should. It's that good. :)

Yay' I's a smart'un! I figured out how to delete that accursed Bookmarks Toolbar Folder entirely, thanks to an apparent 'bug' in the Manage Bookmarks menu. Here's how:

1. Click the Bookmarks menu, then click Manage Bookmarks.
2. Create a new folder, then select it and click the Edit menu, then click Set as Bookmarks Toolbar Folder.
3. Click the Edit menu, then Undo New Folder.
4. Delete the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder.

Normally, you would be unable to delete the new folder, as the BTF is set to be undeleteable from the menu. However, when you Undo New Folder, the command is undone without regard to your setting it as the BTF. Since the old BTF isn't reset, it can be deleted too. :D
