Auto detection of network printers help

Post by jcow79 »

Ok, there seems to be this feature in WindowsXp and up that allows certain network printers to install automatically. I need to figure out which service this is so I can disable it. I'm not talking about any login scripts or anything. The software company I talked to that told me I needed to disable it referred to it as the 'printer auto create' feature. I've never heard that term before. Anyone?

AFAIK it's a "feature" in windows that looks for any printers on the network, and "helpfully" installs them for you. I've not yet found an option to turn it off.

Well, there is an option but it involves linux ;)

Daltons tip is my first bet but that is enabled buy default so it might also be the SSDP Discovery Service.

Start->Run->setvices.msc

Check that the SSDP is running

The SSDP was my guess as well....However I've learned that also has to be disabled on Windows2003 Server. I checked the services in the 2003 server and it didn't have it. Does it go by another name?
