Global Folder Viewing Options
After reinstalling windows after the latest screwup, I have this "feature" inwhich every stupid folder views its files as if its looking at pictures (with the image viewer uptop, and the large icons scrolling along the bottem). While I can manually set each folder to view as icons, is there anyway I can turn this "feature" off for EVERY folder with one click?
Beware Windows. Linux Comes.

But what if you want Picture folders to show Thumbnails, Audio folders to show as Music lists, and all others to show as Document folders? Or even just have windows XP remember the fucking order you have files and folders arranged in root folders. Even after ticking 'Remember Folder settings' in Folder Options the fucking thing can never remember. Suddenly every file and folder in Progamme Files is a fucking large square Thumbnail, And all my pictures decide to show as Detail lists and in alphabetical order rather than contextual order as I set them up!Sir Sirius wrote:If you are using XP set one folder to the way you wan't all of them to be, then with that folder open go to Folder Options (found under Tools) and to the View panel and hit Apply to All Folders.
It's really starting to fuck me off. How about I get to veiw my folders in the way and order I fucking ant to you useless aggravating peice of bloatware crap!
Fucking XP. How is it it manages to get some things right and then bug you to fuck and back with little niggles that really get under your skin. How fucking hard is it to remember how I want my fucking folders?

Explorer will only remember the state of a fixed number of folder locations (200, I think). This includes multiple visits to the same folder, so ones you visit most often will be most likely to stay unchanged (due to their state being saved repeatedly). What I normally do is to use the "Apply to All Folders" trick to get everything into List mode (my preferred default), then use TweakUI to increase the number of remembered folders to around 500 (Explorer->Customizations from the TweakUI menu) before customizing the hell out of each folder. It a hack, but it works well enough in my case. Really would have liked to be able to define a default view for given filetypes, though, but XP doesn't appear to have that provision.

That would work brilliantly, why the hell don't they do it? Set up a small menu in control panel or something with a list of File Types (broadly) like Pictures, Movies, Exe's, Documents, music. And a little pull down as to how they should be displayed in folder view as a default.Datana wrote: Really would have liked to be able to define a default view for given filetypes, though, but XP doesn't appear to have that provision.

I hate this problem. Just once, I'd like Windows t remember that I want My Documents to be sorted by date modified, or My Computer arranged by type and shown in groups, for more than 5 FUCKING SECONDS!

It's such a small thing but it really irritates more than anything else, since they got rid of BSOD.Executor32 wrote:I hate this problem. *snorts* Take it from a tech, they most definitely did NOT get rid of BSODs.
As for memory, oddly enough, I never have that problem. Ever. At all. Course my stuff is organized so that I rarely have to browse around more than a few dozen folders, so that 200-folder mark doesn't ever really come into play.

My folders are organised, but when switching between one or the other the views will change.White Haven wrote:As for memory, oddly enough, I never have that problem. Ever. At all. Lets say I Am browsing the pics in My Pictures (set to thumbnails) and then I open up Fanfilms and Humour (set to Icons) it will carry over the Thumbnail setting from My Pictures! so now the Cpu is used more than normal and the folder takes an age to display its contents. I go up a level and right-click Fanfilms and Humour and select customise... what a surprise its still set to Documents (despite having shown them as Thumbnails; the Pictures setting). So I hit ok re-open F&H and it decides that it will show them as Icons as it should have the first time.
That's one example. How about when I open up Audio, and find its showing as filmstrip. Up a level, rightclick, customise, well what do you know the computer has decided to set them to filmstrip in here as well. I never use filmstrip, ever so I never set it. There's over 100 files i there so it should never default to filmstrip, yet XP decides to pull this option out of its arse for no reason other than to fuck me off. So i set it to Music and it works. But why did I have to reset it in the first place. Fucking useless piece of crap!
