Help with Marathon

Post by Companion Cube »

Despite feeling slightly foolish for asking advice about an eleven-year-old game, I'd like some tips on how to complete the level where you have to kill the Pfhor cyborg thing which controls the S'Pht, or S'Phfft, or whatever the fuck they are. I've killed the thing, and have explored the entire map, as far as I know. What do I do now? Durandal doesn't teleport me when I go up the window indicated by the walkthrough I was using, and I don't remember any other objectives, so....?

You poor bastard. I tried Pfhoraphobia like... 23 times at least before I gave up on it. If you're playing this through Aleph One, just skip the level entirely using cheats, and once you get to the next, spawn in all the weapons you had before you cheated.

Durandal does teleport you once you get every single part of the map explored. There must be some hidden areas or something, since he never tele'd me either.

This level sucks. But the next 5 or so before the end...

Trust me, you want to play them.

EDIT: Cheats for Aleph One: http://source.bungie.org/_usersupport/u ... .html#WUSS

I'm not sure, its been a while, but is that the one with the 10 platforms that crush you into the ceiling? If so, its easy, you just run along the length from the first, and just step off the last. Do the opposite to get the the shield charger.

But seriously, in-game, whoever designed that ship needs to be shot. Half the elevators will kill you if you don't get off at the right moment, the doors slice you in half, there are random pools of lava sitting in the middle of engineering, some switches can only be opened by shooting them with a grenade... :D

I'm stuck in Marathon 2, myself. Ex Cathedra, after you plant the virus. How do I get out?

Actually YT3000, the puzzle I am referring to is the one where there is a series of platforms placed in a stair-like pattern where you have to jump the next as they are lined up. The real catch is the fact that there is a wall between each platform so you literally have to jump off each platform and then hook around the wall and land on the subsequent platform. Its difficult to do.

If you're stuck in the decagonal room, just press the walk key, and you'll swim upwards. After that, the inner temple will be opened. Go back to the beginning of the level, and through the open doors. Kill the roughly 234 troopers waiting for you, and go through all the elevators. :)

Oh, yeah, that one. I remember that. I remember thinking that I was happy the ceiling wasn't also coming down to crush me as I tried to cross. :D

The level were Durandal goes: "How do you spell trouble? t-r-o-u-b-l-e? No. T-R-O-U-B-L-E? No. D-U-R-A-N-D-A-L.", with the hallway ceilings that came down was evil, until I figured out the shortcut that made me skip all but one of the halls. Then it became almost easy.

This game is too good in its evil level design =D My favorite line from the terminals has to be "I AM TYCHO! I WILL DESTROY DURANDAL!" I mean, some of us were wondering what happened to that third AI >=D

A few levels later in Marathon 2, and I think D should sign his posts "Still Rampant, Durandal".

But you must admit, it is entertaining to watch me work, even if Bernhard Strauss would never have thought of using me this way.

Can Marathon 1 be played on Windows? I haven't played any of the Marathon games except in multiplayer mode years ago, but I'd like to try them out. Would the continuity of the story be horribly butchered if I started with Marathon 2?

Durandal gives you most of the backstory himself in 2... not that you can really trust him :) However, I'd like to know if there's an Aleph-compatible Marathon 1 resource too; not being able to play it makes it very important that I do, if you know what I mean.

And what the SMEG is going on with Infinity? Its impenetrably wierd.

The only part of the backstory that interests me is what was going through Durandals brain in the minutes before the game starts.

More or less. M1A1, its slightly different, better graphics, etc. But really close to the original.

Could you describe the differences? All I know about M1 is what I gleaned from some Marathon story site, so I'm unlikely to notice slight scripting or level design differences. I hope all the wacky map messages are still there :)

Actually, that site is extraordinarily amusing. Baseless conjecture in the face of simple, effective explanations :) Does anyone HONESTLY think you DON'T play the 10th Mjolnir cyborg placed on Marathon by a Martian terrorist organisation who planned on using them and one of the shipboard AIs to take over the colony?

Gah. Suddenly, I can't rocket jump anymore.

On Feel the Noise, is there any way to finish the level without rocket jumping to get onto the higher level in between the two rooms surrounded with staircases and filled with lava? I got up there about 3 times without even trying with rockets and not knowing what to expect got slaughtered, and now that I'm ready, suddenly, I can't do it anymore.

So, is there another way?

Never mind, I got my jumpiness back the next day. And completed Durandal.

Now onto Marathon Infinity.

*Leaves. Plays MI for about 4 seconds, and comes back.*

As Chardok is so fond of saying, Double Yew Tee Ef. How soon after Marathon: Durandal does this take place? Because from the screens it seems to be maybe a few hours later, but I have basically no weaponry at the start, and the armour is different. Very different...

Nothing is making sense anymore!!!
