God damn you, connect!

Post by MKSheppard »

Okay, my brother got a new laptop with B/G wireless access, and I got the
router to work with normal wiring, but when I try to connect his laptop to
our new secured wireless network, it won't connect; conversely his laptop
can connect to a non secured network in my area called "USSR"

I haven't acutally used the default windows wireless software, but from what I've seen you should be able to create a profile for the network in question, fill out all the correct info, and just tell the wireless card to attempt to use this profile.

Also, make sure you are using the correct kind of encryption, there are two of them, the old one and the new one. I forget their names, and know that the newer one is better and can use a short word or something as the key or some such... I don't have my lappy in front of me and I honestly don't recall the names. If the above doesn't work, seek out updates for the laptop. Make sure you are using the right kind of security (is it SSL and something else with an S? Bah for not remembering!)

I got it connected, I just realized from staring at the two of them, I had
to enter in the network key that was generated by my router, a random
string of numbers instead of the passkey that I entered for the router

Okay, this is retarded, all three computers can use the router, a Linksys one
to view the internet, but they simply won't view each other's shared folders.

Two computers are running Windows 2000 SP4, and the laptop is running
XP SP2.

EDIT: and the laptop's wireless connection drops in and out constantly
despite it being less than 15 feet from the wireless router, while it gets
a stable connection from the unsecured network god knows where....

The difference? That network isn't running security at all, while I've got
security enabled on my home network

No, just that most laptops are cheaply made. Business laptops tend to be much better constructed.
