Parallel Woes

While not quite having that new computer I was looking for a while back, I'm a step closer - I just got a nice notebook for general use and for classes, and I thought that this would be the perfect time to get all my goodies off the ol' rust bucket and stash them in a corner of the notebook's drive until I finally got the desktop.. This evening, while out with the old man, I stopped by Circuit City and picked up a parallel cable and a Belkin FastCAT 5e ethernet cable - which, by the way, doesn't work with my dorm's systems, so a big FUCK YOU to the asshole who said it would (I knew I should've gone for the six) - and after getting back, hooked the two together and set 'em up.

Thing is, though, is that I can't seem to find any way to actually get to the files on the old computer (an Aptiva E26 running Windows 98) to show up on the new one (a Brite model that's running XP). I've got confirmation of a connection (running at 4 megs a second) and I've marked all the folders I want to shuttle over as Shared with identical passwords.

What am I missing? Is it a deal where you can only establish a connection if the two PCs have the same operating system, is there some folder or function I've missed, or something else?

I may be mistaken but to directly connect two computers you need a crossover cable, not just any ordinary ethernet cable. That might be your problem.

Hence the parallel - the Ethernet's just for general network access for doin' regular stuff.
