The closer you can get it to Shadowrun, the better.

The two campaigns I had most fun with were Evil Chedder Revenge and New World .
Evil Chedder Revenge has at it's core every fantasy cliche. There is an unfeasably large, peaceful and prosperous kingdom. To the east is the Evil Chedder Empire ie ruled by an insane wizard which despite it's lack of resources, people and ability to field anything resembling a standing army is considered a threat by the Good Kingdom.
PCs are minor nobs of the ECE and must act to protect their homes and loved ones from the adventurers out to loot, rape, pillage and raze everything to the ground. Eventually they must take the offensive to the Good Kingdom.
ECR is a no holds barred fight for survival on both sides and gets very grim and brutal quickly. It was come up with after someone asked what do all these evil kingdoms think of being invaded regulary just because the ruler thinks underpants make good crowns.
New World is exactly what it sounds like. From a more stable continent young adventurers go explore the vast uncharted wilderness of the new world. Fame, fortune, land and titles await! Only since the natives won't keel over from disease (magic) it will be slightly more difficult.
NW gives a rational basis for small adventurer bands heading out into the 'wilderness'. It keeps major support far away. In fact one of the 'rewards' of the campaign is as PCs settle down and claim their own lands the players build their own support structure for the younger characters.
And I prefer skills based systems. I prefer games which emphasise an individual's raw skill, smarts and guile. Games where players are a combo of wierd ass abilities and magic items are very dull. Since D20 encourages both these aspects my thoughts on D20 are best left unmentioned.
But big ups to TSRs more 'daring' product lines like Planescape, Spelljammer and Dark Sun. Earthdawn was interesting too.
