CD - to - DVD transformations and Rome

Post by Stark »

So I wasted a few hours today combining all my multi-cd games into one image. I'm so lazy when it comes to installs, that loading a different image is a pain in the ass. My primary goal was to make Rome an unattended install, since it takes forever and keeps dying on me once it's done.

Heres the kicker. Most games just run on datafiles, and if they're all in the same place it'll either never ask for disks, or if its hardcoded with messages it'll just keep going when you press ok. In Rome, however, it appears to actually check every disk. So even though I was able to image my disks and use them, if I put all the datafiles in one spot and set the panel to give me all the options, it STILL has a cry at disk 2. I've heard there are rescripted installers out there, that don't ask: I'll have to find one.

But what was their plan? Why make it that way?

If you go to gamecopyworld.com you can find instructions and a replacement MSI file for making Rome: Total War into an installable DVD. I've done it myself and it works fine. You'll still need the original CD in order to actually play the game unless you install Daemon Tools and mount the crack image.

So THAT's where I saw it! Thanks: now I can get down to trying to solve the Mysterious Rome Battle Crashes of Doom(tm).

Isn't it wierd that back in the day we had games with upwards of 15 3.5" disks, and now its too hard to go to the shelf and get three disks? :)

The msi I downloaded contains an error - it includes the wrong path for pack.dat (data/data/animation/pack.dat instead of /data/animation/pack.dat). Are msi's editable?

EDIT - Oh nevermind, they expect me to put the second and third disks in as full directories instead of blending them. Bah.
