Best Ipod?

Post by Equinox2003 »

I got to examine one today, of course I want one for myself now. Anybody
care to leave comments on thier own Ipod? Such as, was it worth the price? How many GB's are enough? Which accesories are the best?
Any comments would help anybody considering buying an Ipod. Thanks.

My iPod's great. Definitely worth it. One word, though: 40 GB is way the fuck too much, unless you have about 10 frillion* songs to put on it.

*a frillion is the largest number smaller than infinity, defined as a one followed by a frillion zeroes.

I like my 15 gig 3G - of course, it was a free upgrade from the Mini back from when they had the huge demand when they were first released.

If you drive a lot, get the car charger and a tape deck adapter.

The iPod dock is pretty much useless...just makes your desk look pretty.

I dunno, I found the dock station meant that I didn't have to leave the damn thing lying around where I kept tripping over the wire and accidentally knocking the thing off the desk.

I'm very happy with my 3G 15GB as well, quite like the top buttons rather the totally integrated wheel thingy on the newer ones up, and I've still got 6 gigs of space on the thing. Tape deck adapted is the best thing I bought, also means I can plug my laptop into my car when the ipod dies and I really want some decent music.

I've got the 60GB Photo.

Of course, it's too much for my music collection, and any CDs I can borrow, but enabling disk access gives me a handy external hard drive as well, so that I can back up to it or move files around.

The dock has its uses. It has a line-out port, after all.

Actually, you can use the headphone port for that.

Anyway, I'm very happy with my 40 GB iPod. I only use about 3 GB for music, but it also makes a good back up drive.

So does the fuckin' iPod. That's how I connect it to my car stereo.

The ipod has an unamped line out, as opposed to a amped and ever-so-slightly distorted headphone port?

Depends on your priorities, listening habits, and how you intend to use one. If you value small size & portability and don't mind reloading songs on there on a semi-regular basis, the shuffle or mini's the best bet. If you have a big music collection and want to put the whole thing on the iPod while preserving the quality as much as possible, then I'd lean towards a large capacity standard iPod.

In terms of accessories, Ety ER-6i earbuds. Somewhat costly but sounds a lot better than the stock while providing isolation from outside noise. A must IMO if you ride public transit a lot.

Quick question: i'm thinking about getting a 30GB ipod photo. On the specs on the website it says that USB 2.0 is required. How can I check to see if I have the necessary version of USB?

The ipod works with USB 1 but it is slow as hell.

And USB 2 cards or firewire are cheap and easy to get, don't let that be the factor.

On the size, I'd advise you personally to take all the music you have with you.

1. What's the total size of your music collection? A lot of people only have 3-6GB; I know I don't have more. It's up to you. See 3; if you don't need that stuff, buy the smallest ipod that'll fit it all.

2. How quickly is that collection growing?

3. Do you do a lot of video or graphics or sound work and move it around? To school or something? Anything that takes up a lot of storage space? Do you want a 20,30,60 GB hard drive to backup data on? If so, go for a full ipod. If not, a lesser ipod will do.

It's hard to recommend a shuffle though. No screen, constant switching of music. I'm assuming that you can afford more...

ER-6i rock the world ... if you have $150. If that's too much, go for Sennheiser MX450/550, Sony EX-81, Sennheiser PX100 etc... Depending on your exact needs. Mind you, the ER-6i are probably worth it.
