My mother is obsessed with Bejewled, my father is obsessed with Age of Empires. AOE isn't quite free but it's soooo old you can probably get it for like $1 somewhere.

Do they like strategy games? If so, you might want to install Battle for Wesnoth, a free strategy/RPG game.

Revolution Software's old adventure games, including Lure of the Temptress, and Beneath a Steal Sky, are available for free download.

For a free puzzle game, I recommend the Dyson's Telescope game. Its an online game but you can downloadall of the levels for free. The rules and object of the game are simple, plus it has different levels of difficulty. Its very satisfying yet addicting: you use a series of telescopes to push or pull a ball toward the goal.

I also recommend Castlemouse, but I am not sure how much you get with the downloaded version. The online version is quite fun and has different levels of difficulty as well as hints if you get stuck. Castlemouse is similar to Dyson's except the goal is to scare a mouse into its hole by placing other animal characters in the right sequence.

Both games have simple rules and well defined goals which can be important if your parents are used to mainly card and board type games. They are also evil games since they can take a lot of your time. Bad Dyson's telescope, bad. :)

Are they online? Because if they are,

Shockwave
Addicting Games.com
and
I am Bored.com,

should keep them entertained.

My father has an obsession with Kyodai Mahjongg...probably the best Mahjongg game out there, lots of different playing styles, plus a bunch of different games using the Mahjongg blocks as well.

http://www.kyodai.com/

Although he plays Age of Empires even more ;)

You could always download Tribes, its up for download free, though from the genre's you listed I doubt they'd like it.

My dad quite liked it. Besides, Faram is thirty something, it's not like his mamma och pappa are going to take away his computer or anything.

True, but it doesn't exactly fit in with the genre's Faram listed.

I certainly know my father wouldn't like it. But he's a retired DEA officer

I don't know what games your parents would like, so:

Battlecruiser. Not a bad game, but it's not supported, though.

I almost forgot: Pocket Tanks.

Not a free complete game, but a very generous demo with no time limit. Possibly more their speed, too.

It also lacks decent documentation and is very complex...
I don't think that they would like it.

Master of Orion 2. Not exactly free (I just picked it up recently at EB games for 10 bucks  ), but it's pure ecstasy. A must have if your mum and pop like strategy games.

Oops. Good point. The game is a little to ambitious for its execution.

Well, yes. I really like the theme music to pocket tanks, though.

There's more free stuff at www.abandonia.com, but the Dosbox acts poorly on my version of XP, at least. Something about exiting to error because of a failure to render.

I think the programs here aren't as stripped down as they are at Underdogs, but then Abandonia is also a much smaller site.
