My New Toy...

Post by Keevan_Colton »

In prepration for my year in Canada I've just ordered up my new toy, a laptop. Here's what I finally ended up going for, an IBM Thinkpad R50e.

These are the specs:

Celeron 1.4 GHz
256 RAM (buying in another 256 in a couple of days)
15" XGA display, 1024x768 (24bit)
30Gb Hard disk
802.11b/g wireless
4.7 hour battery life according to the specs.

For under £400 including shipping and VAT.

That screen might make your eyes bleed, otherwise the price is right.

Shity LCD with substandard refresh rates or color changes can give you one hell of a wicked eyestrain.

Thus the bleeding eyes bit.

I've seen nothing wrong with Thinkpad displays. They may be a bit inadequate for someone who wants an enormous desktop, true, but 1024x768 is a decent enough resolution, and unless IBM quality has dropped into the shitter as of late, their screens refresh quickly enough for my overly-sensitive eyes, and tend to be well-behaved in terms of color and brightness.

Very nice. My uncle just bought a T42 (P-M 1.6GHz, 768MB RAM, 40GB HD) and I have a T22 (P3 900MHz, 384MB RAM, 40GB HD).

Ah, well as far as displays go I'm still using a 14" moniter that can just barely scrape 50hz and 800x600 so the display will not be a problem for me.

Give us a review when you get your laptop in; I've never worked with an R-series and am wondering how they are.
