BIG Win98 prob with games.

Post by roguetiger »

ok I know I'm running an ANCIENT  computer. Win98SE, Athlon 1.1 ghz, 256MB DDR (no job for 7 months now so no new comp in my future :( ). I'm trying to reload a couple of games and it goes wierd on me. I try to load star trek dominion wars and it tells me it needs data 3 when there's no data 3 on the disc. Imperium Galactica II Alliances (sorry I love the gameplay) tells me it can't find the animations. Don't know if its cause I have Direct X 9. on it and its over the Direct X it needs or what. Hopefully a job opening is coming soon and I'll be able to upgrade. Unless someone has a newer one they aren't using and wants to send it to me. yea right I know but thought whoever reads this would at least get a nice laugh out of it.

Sounds like its a corrupting hard drive rather than OS problems.

When was the last time you re-installed Windows? When I used Win 98SE I found I had to back up my data, re-format the drive and reinstall Windows every 18 months or so to keep the system in good working order.

Sage advice, this. I managed to run a vanilla Win98 install for close to three years without reinstalling it, but I had Norton Systemworks to keep the thing in one piece, which it did admirably well. If you don't have that or some other powerful maintenance tool, your installation is probably so fucked up that it's a wonder the comp starts up in the first place.

Why is it so goddamned hard to get little assholes like you to admit it when you fuck up? Is it pride? What gives you the right to have any pride?

Having an Athlon 1.1ghz isn't really any kind of justification to continue using 98....
