I've been having some fun with the more-than-occasionally stupid AI; having attacked my town with a vastly larger force, the Greek army proceeded to stampede down the street leading to the city centre, forming a phalanx just in time to reach my mercenary pikemen and battle-damaged Principes. They then butted heads for a small time, before being startled into wakefulness by a clump of charging Hastati arriving from behind. Hilarity, or at least horrific polygon-death, ensued.

It's nicer to provide links, or at least the name of a website, when suggesting that they try something that requires a download. Comosicus, you should be able to play Dacia with the mod you will find by following the link above.Darth Wong wrote:Have you tried the "unlock all factions" mod?
Europa Barborum, an upcoming Total Conversion, should contain Dacia and several new units for it.

The truth is that I am not a very big fan of Strategy games (I am more interested in story-driven games), but the oportunity to play Dacia was the thing that made me try RTW.

You don't even need the mod, all you need to do is change the "descr_strat" file in Folder: Data / World / Maps / Campaign / Imperial_campaign
Just make sure you don't put Rebels/slaves as playable.

Having played the RTR mod for the first time with version 6.0, I have these reactions to it:
- Battle is OK. Horses move a little slower, but nothing to complain about.
- The campaign game is unacceptably slowed down by ridiculously long build times. I don't mind the idea of having to build auxilia structures to assimilate the local population; many strategy games incorporate this kind of rule (Master of Orion 2 had it too). What I object to is the fact that after spending so many years assimilating the city with phase 1, phase 2, and phase 3 auxilia structures, you still need an additional 8 turns to build a barracks. Couldn't they have left the barracks build times alone? I'm going to open up export_desc_buildings.txt and hack this shit.
- The level of professionalism in the all-new graphics, opening scenes, and music is amazing for a fan mod. It seriously has the polish and feel of a store-bought expansion pack.

It's quite easy (BTW, I misspelled it; it's actually "export_descr_buildings.txt" in the "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data" directory). Just do a global search/replace on the phrase "construction 2" (with two spaces between "construction" and "2") and replace it with "construction 1" (as an example). This would cut the build times in half for buildings that take 2 turns to build. It's much easier and faster to do global search/replace operations than to go through the whole file. I tried just dividing all of the build times in half (and rounding up fractions), going right up to "construction 10" being cut down to "construction 5".Adrian Laguna wrote:Great idea! Comosicus may be in luck, because one of the guys at the RTR forums is apparently working on a Dacian mini-mod for RTR; scroll down a bit in this thread, until you arrive at the enormous signature. That's all of the evidence I've come across so far, but I'll take a look at the rest of the fora.

In fact I do (sort of) know the guy who runs the site where those sig links lead, containing the Dacian info. I'll see if I can possible get some more information, although I have't spoken with him in almost two years.

I have just reinstalled RTW last night and installed the unlock mod. It worked like a charm. Thank you both.Adrian Laguna wrote:It's nicer to provide links, or at least the name of a website, when suggesting that they try something that requires a download. Some one else suggested editing the faction data into a config file. It didn't worked for me and messed up with the starting factions.

I think the coolest thing about this mod has to be the region-specific auxilia. Recruiting gallic noble cavalry from former Gaul cities, for example. Very cool.
