I switched from Internet Exploder to Firefox ages ago, and have since never looked back.

What the hell is this "opera" thing anyway? Firefox has never been particularly memory intensive for me.

Opera is a browser just like FF, except(from my experiance) it works out of the box, unlike Firefox where you want dozens of extensions that drive up RAM usage.

What?!? Say it ain't so?

How will reading SDNet ever be the same, without all the Creationist advertising at the top of the browser? Where will I now get my daily dose of ironic chuckles from?

It used to be just like visiting Bad Astronomy and seeing Astrology and Moon Hoax ads on Phil's Google-sponored-ad section. :)

Seriously, it's a great move, and I upgraded as soon as I heard about it.

I can dig up an article about this if you want.
The "great" browser test shows different results, though. :)
I'd say Opera is the better all-around browser, given the results.

I just use FF as it is, no need to have all sorts of stupid fiddly bits added to it.

The sole extension that I used was session saver. It really sucked having to reopen 20+ tabs from memory prior to that, each time FF crashed or had to be terminated.

It sound like a file association problem.

In Windows XP, right-click on a .jpg file and select "Open With... > Choose Program". In the window that comes up, find and select Opera. If it's not there click "Browse" and find it manually. Before clicking OK, check the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file." Do the same for a .jpeg file. Done.
Except that'll make Opera try to open up every time I want to use a JPG or JPEG file, wouldn't it? My file associations for GIF, PNG and BMP are set for another proggie and they open up fine in Opera.

:wanker: The extensions are purely extras. Firefox works just fine for me "out of the box", and the only extension I've ever added on any type of reliable basis whenever I do an install is the weatherfox. Otherwise its functionality is unaffected with or without extensions.

So exactly why was the wanker smiley there?

So basicly your happy with FF, fine, any reason to still argue about the merits of the browsers?

I don't know then, I don't really understand the problem that you are describing.

You mean besides your idiotic claim of Firefox not being able to work without an assload of extensions?

Never claimed that, just said that from what I've been reading on these forums, you want a buttload of extensions with FF.

This is looking like Spam, If you are going to argue about FF vs Opera you can do better.

Just a friendly reminder.

That's strange. Firefox is never a skimpy browser on RAM, but 377MB? What are you doing?

As for speed, I think Opera is being a little faster doing the loading of this board, but the difference is such that I can't be sure. As for loading times, I just don't see a improvement over the Firefox beta version.

Is there anyway I can Adblock in Opera? I don't mean Popup Block. I mean Adblocking (which is to say, I can decide I can ban particular sites from loading)?

I'm gonna stay with FF for a long time. For a developer point of view is the best choice and it has a couple of extensions that simply make my life a whole lot easier. WebDeveloper, ColorZilla, MeasureIt and AllInOne Mouse Gestures - these are my extensions and they suit my needs excellent.

I found Opera to have some rendering issues compared with FF and even IE. Haven't checked the latest version, but as I've seen on another peoples systems, it still has some problems with some sites that work perfectly on FF and IE.

Leaving Firefox running for a very long time (days/weeks) while opening and closing numerous tabs in that time without ever exiting completely will cause it to eventually consume 300-400 MB or RAM and cause it lag one's computer while it's slowing to a crawl. (Personal experience.) The quick solution to this problem is to simply completely close and restart Firefox.
