Selling My Laptop

Post by brothersinarm »

Hey guys I'm trying to sell my used laptop at school and I'm just having some difficulty pricing it. I was hoping someone who was familiar with computers could tell me what price my laptop should cost on the secondary market. The computer is a dell Inspiron 5160 laptop, but Dell doesn't seem to carry this model anymore or even ones similar (all the laptops on their site now carry Intel M processors) so I can't compare it to newer models. But the system specs are as follows.

Intel Pentium IV 3.06Ghz HP processor
256 MB ram
40 GB Hard Drive
Nvidia GeForce Go 128MB Video Card
CD/DVD Writer

The age is less than a year old, approximately 8 months, almost 9 now. I'm hoping to buy an ibook using the money from selling the laptop. So as close to $1299 as possible. I'm not sure if this is realistic or not. But thanks to anyone who helps.

I'd pay 300-500 bucks for that if I had the money, was local and was in the market. Maybe you can get a little more if you find a real sucker and if it's in good condition. Who ever buys that is gonna have sink a few bucks into ram so that it stops being slow as hell (ram is especially important with a slow laptop hard drive and that thing is sorely lacking in the ram department) any way so if they're at all computer literate they're gonna try and keep it low so they have some loot left over for that afterwards.

To give you an idea of what new machines go for, I paid $970 or so shipped from Dell for my Inspiron 9300.

I sold the Inspiron 1150 that it replaced for $500 back in April.
My best guess is that you'd be lucky to get $600 US out of it, as P4 based laptops aren't in very high demand due to heat and power issues.
My 1150 had a P4 2.5Ghz, and I could have heated the house with it.

But by all means put a classified ad in your local paper, as you just might find someone who isn't current on pricing and just wants a used laptop.

Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to price it at $900 then and allow for some room to negotiate.
