Oooh I am Stupid (XP password trouble)
So I changed my Xp password, and when I try to log in again, neither the new or the the old passwords work. Also, When I try variations, none of them work either. Is there anything I can do?

If not, hit F8 when starting up, just as you see the little cursor blinking; best to have your finger on it from when the screen lights up, though, just in case. If you forgot your Admin password... you are teh *screwed*.DPDarkPrimus wrote:Are you using the admin account?

You could try running l0phtcrack, or some other password cracker for Windows... Do you have a password reset disk?

The one method I would recommend using, which is linked to off the site that Pu-239 provided, is ntpasswd. It's a bootable floppy disk, so download it and make a floppy from your laptop, then boot the main computer from that. Run the script as per the directions and reset your password (but IIRC it has to be shorter than the original password -- the easiest thing to do is to simply blank the password out and then change it again from Windows).

Dont use the "Administrator" account as your damn account.
Do you have any other accounts with administrator access on there?

Do a repair install, not a full install+disk format and it will keep any documents & stuff.Comando293 wrote:Screw it. I've so much crap, a reinstall might be the way to go.

You could probably use a Knoppix live CD to log in and at the very least rescue your big files before having to do such, if possible. Assuming you have some type of burner on the system anyway.Comando293 wrote:Screw it. I've so much crap, a reinstall might be the way to go.

Look, if you have access to a floppy drive, use ntpasswd as described above. It WILL work!
If you can't create a floppy from your laptop, but the laptop has a CD burner, then download the Trinity Rescue Kit, burn it, and boot it. At the command line, type (1) "mountallfs" and (2) "winpass". Blank your administrator password, and hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot.
Then just reboot normally and log in with a blank password, then change it...

However, any files encypted with EFS (Windows file encyption) is lost. Kill the password and you kill the only way to get the data back.
Also any cached passwords or passwords stored in IE will be nuked. Those are linked to your account password and a forced reset nukes them.
