Stargate MMORPG

Post by Acidburns »

Spotted this in April's PC Gamer. I know there's a lot of Stargate fans here (not a huge fan myself) and I thought they'd be interested in this. I've not seen any posts about it either.

Stargate Worlds is a MMORPG being developed Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment.

.....Pick a side (from either the Stargate Command or the System lords), suit up, team up and head through a gate into another world.

The idea is to vie for control over the worlds you transport to, extending your side's sphere of influence throughout the Universe, via the medium of guns. Actually that's a bit disingenuous: there's the possibilty that the military squads will include non-combat roles, such as scientist, medic or researcher. Diplomatic approaches are on offer, and if that doesn't work more martial options are available.

Been posted a time or two. The general consensus has been 'Fuck them' for dropping the Stargate FPS in favor of a MMORPG.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Sorry, I tried searching, I hadn't thought it was posted.

Yes, I would have thought a FPS would have been more practical. The MMO market is getting really, really flooded soon. There's going to be casualties.

However, the stargate system seems to be rather suited to a MMO I would think.

I always figured that a 3D squad-based RTS/RPG, something along the lines of Fallout Tactics would have been the ideal subgenre for a Stargate SG-1 game.

In addition to his legacy of pioneering computer entertainment titles, Joe Ybarra has been at the forefront of MMORPG computer gaming. He has produced and directed the development of three MMORPG titles, Shadow of Yserbius, Shadowbane, and The Matrix Online.
That's what scares me the most, VP of development worked on failed MMOs :( .

Yes, dropping the FPG game is why I'm not going to care about any stargate games till they are actually released

Unless this game is awsome in some way, I'm not going to touch it.

After the shit which was pulled regarding the FPS game, which I was VERY eagerly anticipating, I'll be completely turned off to SG-1 games until I can hold in my hands some kind of decend single-player experience.'

If MGM expects me to shell out my hard earned cash for this, they can pucker up and kiss my ass............

Stargate X-COM. It fits perfectly. It's got all the elements. Tactical small scale battles, reverse-engineering alien devices and weapons, and intercepting enemy motherships.

I mean as an official product, not some mod of a pre-existing product made by some fuckfaced fans in their rooms and basement while sucking on Bawls bottles for sustinance.

'

There is nothing like that in existance. An X-Com styled game however, would be perfect for SG-1 material. :P

My apologies, I thought you were refering to an actual available mod.

Then this must be rectified! To the basement lair!

Actually, there could be some potential to pull of a decent MMO-FPS and probably keep it free to boot, as long as the 'main' server was more of a match-making lobby (like Phantasy Star Online, except with actual stuff to do in your Stargate Facility/temple/town like work on collected data, items, and team management), and actual combat and travell was regulated to client-side servers, with 20-30 players in a single contested zone and little data transferring from one area to another.

Or maybe not, I don't have a lot of specific facts about network structuring and that concept popped into my head just now. And I am reminded I probably should try playing X-COM, as well.

This may be off-topic, but I didn't think it warrented a new thread.
(If i'm wrong, mods, please split this)

Regarding the cancellation of the SG-1 FPS.

Has MGM actually made an official announcement regarding the game's cancellation? As far as I can tell, the game was damn near done, and MGM just sat on it's hands and refused to sign off on another publisher until Perception (the company making the game) went bankrupt. Has MGM officially come out and said "The game is cancelled," Or are they just going to let it sit in eternal limbo?

i hve a feeling that game was going to suck big time.

They didn't want to release a piece of shit game and set the possible franchise off on a bad foot.

A planetside style sg-1 game sounds good to me. If its free to play i'll get it.

None of the info I saw about the game indicated it would suck. Actually, I thought it looked kinda cool.

I don't even think the game has been "officially" canceled. I cannot find an official notice of cancellation from MGM, or anyone for that matter. It seems like the game is just stuck in eternal limbo, with a less than 1% chance of ever getting out.

Re: This MMORPG. If they do this as a traditional everquest style mmo, I won't even get within ten feet of it when I go to best buy. A planetside style game would be kinda nice, but I don't think that's what they're going for here.

From what i recall the publisher said they won't publish the game as its not up to what they think the fans of SG-1 would expect.

The developer said "fuck you" and the publishing company wouldn't back down.

When a publisher refuses to release a game, you have to wonder whats up.

I remember all that. The game continued development, and the development studio recived offers from several other publishers, but MGM, as the holders of the Stargate License, had to ok one of them. They did not. They just let the development studio run out of money. To quote the unnamed developer from the Gateworld article "They [MGM] wanted this game gone for some reason, but didn't want to be the ones to do it."

with the news of this MMO, I gues their reason is becoming clear....

Oddly enough, for the PnP Stargate game, it was apparently Sony Entertainment that pulled the plug on it...maybe MGM just cant say no to people ;)

Sony pulled the plug on the RPG? Never knew that.

With the FPS, Normally, i'd just be really pissed for a month or two about the cancellation, and then let it go, but as of yet, there has been NO official notice of the game's cancellation. Everything I saw on the net about it is dated January 2006, and ends with "An official statement regarding the game's cancellation should be forthcoming from MGM."

Amazon.com and Wal Mart are still offering pre orders for the game for christs sake!

That's what really pisses me off. as long as those are up there, I still end up holding a little hope that i'll see the game someday, even though I know I won't. That's why I just CAN'T seem to let this go.
