For an interesting read, take a look at Herman Kahn's On Thermonuclear War - he does some extrapolation in it based on the "higher, faster" route the USAF was taking before the switch to missile-based deterrance. OTOH, extrapolation of what computers could do based on some of the 1950s designs and growth were wildly inaccurate - on the conservative side.
