My PS2 makes a strange noise with Final Fantasy 9 disk 2

Post by XaLEv »

When disk 2 is in the machine, it makes a sort of 'zipping' noise, but only briefly when it first grabs the disk when the tray is retracted or when it releases the disk before extending the tray. It didn't make the noise during play or with any of the other 14 or so disks I tried. It failed to recognize the disk once. I examined it and compared it to the others and the only physical difference I could see was that disk 2 lacked the slight circular striations around the hub that were visible on the undersides of 1, 3 and 4.

Any ideas?

Your PS2 is obviously possessed.

On a more serious note, are you sure it's not scratched or warped at all? I have found that at times drives can get really picky about even what seem to us as insignificant scratches or nicks.

Is your PS2 one of the earlier models?
Mine is, and there's this disc read error problem you could get. At first it'll not recognize a disc here and there, and then it will get worse, until you can't play anything on it.
It's because the reading laser goes out of alignment. IIRC there's a guide somewhere on the net that shows you how to fix it.
And this is why you don't watch anything produced by Ronald D. Moore after he had his brain surgically removed and replaced with a bag of elephant semen.-Gramzamber, on why Caprica sucks
