Need help with sound on this tower

I don't know if the motherboard doesn't have a soundcard or what, but I'm getting no sound on this bitch. I mean, there's all these high-speed looking headphone jacks in back to support up to 5.1 but...

Anyway, what're some programs and techniques to diagnose this problem? (I also have an apparently busted $300 monitor -- I'm using a glorious CRT in it's stead -- but I'm just gonna refer that to a computer repairmen)

Speakers on? Is the sound card muted, or volume down all the way? (It's surprising how often it's stupid stuff that trips you up)

When I go to
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control
I get the following message:

There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware.

This program will now close.

(btw, this problem happened too late for me to fix it last time and my brother apparently didn't care for anything but pr0n since he has an account whose documents I [can't see]

I'll do that (the message) but again, there are physical headphone outlets in the back...

edit: for example, when I'm on AIM and I hit ENTER, I get the standard system beep noise ALTHOUGH I CAN hear that in headphones too

edit 2: Under Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, I have "No Audio Device" so I CAN'T fiddle w/ the volume, and for the record, watching but not hearing google video.

Finally, Under Hardare in Sounds and Audio Devices is 2 DVD CD drives, Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Media Control Devices, Legacy Video Capture Devices and Video Codecs. It's an ASUS motherboard and I do have the CD that comes w/ the motherboard (along w/ the store number of the guy who installed it, a reputable business, and the instruction manual)

Double post since that ones getting stupid: using a USB headset gets around the problem, but the headphone jacks in back are stll not worth jack, precluding speakers, so it's still a problem. Any help still greatly appreciated.

It sounds as if he never bothered installing the sound drivers.

Did you try reinstalling the drivers from the Asus CD?

That seems to be the case; although when I do it now manually, it appears that the Realtek High Definition Audio doesn't work (says something about missing a file) and another Audio driver says that no device exists (which is obviously not the case, all the headphone jacks are mounted securly on the motherboard below the USB ports

Check both the BIOS and the mobo manual to see if he disabled the onboard sound either in the BIOS or by means of jumpers on the motherboard.

I run an Asus A8V and have no problems with my onboard sound.
Though from what you've posted ('high definition audio'), my guess is that you're using an Intel based system.
