Strange, serious FireFox problem... (help ASAP please)

Post by Praxis »

I'm over at a friend of mine's house trying to fix her computer- actually, a single program, FireFox. However, after experimenting around with it I just can't find anything wrong.

The browser simply refuses to work. It renders HTML pages on the hard disk just fine, but if I type in any URL, it does nothing. I click a bookmark, it does nothing. I choose to run the updater, and it tells me
AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200)
Other than the fact that it won't go to any web sites, there seems to be nothing wrong with it.

Now, I have to keep her saved passwords and bookmarks. I renamed her FireFox profile folder, and uninstalled FireFox, deleted the Mozilla directory, deleted every reference in the registry to Mozilla, etc. I did everything I could to make it forget FireFox had ever been installed. Yet, when I reinstall, a completely fresh copy, it does the exact same thing. Intercrap Explorer still works fine, but she hates it and has FireFox all set up and doesn't want to go back.

I'm over at the house right now, so I need answers as soon as possible. Thanks, guys. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Forget it- the culprit was an overzealous firewall that had apparently specificly blocked FireFox.exe. Problem solved.
