Help with Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion

Post by Lord Pounder »

A month after buying it i finally installed it. but the performance is shit, the mouse pointer on character creation is so slow it's not funny and the game is even worse.

For the record my computer runs an Athlon64 3200 2.2 gig, 1.5 gig DDR memory a 120 gig HD and a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200. As far as i can tell all of this meets atleast minium requirements. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

What resolution are you playing at because that graphics card is so close nowdays to shit above 640x480 that I'm afraid of touching it.

That FX 5200 is seriously behind the times. Most modern games that say they support GF FX series really mean FX 5700 and up due to the shader versions needed, which the older cards simply do not have.

Yes, everything on that system is good to go except the GPU. You don't have to go nuts, but I'd probably look at a 6600 GT or something.

I think you've been burned like I was. My video card was on the list of supported cards on the box, but it didn't actually support it, as confirmed by the Oblivion FAQ. So I had to buy a new video card.

5200s were shit from the day they were made - someone I know bought one (AU$80, utterly budget) and it had worse performance than many much older video cards. These days almost anything would be several times better.

And Oblivion is just a piece of shit to run. I can second Arthur Tuxedo's recommendation: I have a 6600GT (very cheap these days) and I can run it fine, and even haxxxx0r the detail and draw distances up.

Seconded, My PC is also inferior to that in every way, but thanks to a 6600Gt even Oblivion runs pretty fucking great.

Take a look at Oldblivion. It will make the graphics better, and should help performance.

nVIDIA sells cards for almost 200 bucks cheaper if you get one with the "GT" tag on it instead of the "GTX" tag. I have a 7900 GT and Oblivion works relatively good. Of course, everyone knows that the game itself is a beast... total system hog.

Oh... and the FX 5200 is NOT supported by oblivion. The lowest you can run (Not play and certainly not enjoy) the game is FX 5700. I had a 5200 in my old PC.

Oh, and if you build a new PC, build it to CONQUER oblivion's requirements. I did, and so far I have not found a game that needs more out of my PC. Yet, even still... I get lag in TES: IV ... go figure.

If you've got an FX5200, you have an AGP slot, not PCI-E. Avoid anything that says "PCI-E" or "PCI-Express" on it, which is most cards nowadays.
